Yeah sure...I'm a dreck collector, and despite the fact that these coins sell for pennies on the dollar, I am constantly being out bid at levels well above the price guides. What am I doing wrong ?
Went to the monthly show in Auburn, MA today. Got there about 11 am and it was packed. Many more attending than past few months. Also many people out and about on the highways even though it was a cold day. People are out spending money. Don't know if it's a cabin fever remedy or is the economy actually showing signs of improvement? As for me, I bought the very last Barber half I needed to finish a complete set. This is something that I have been working on for years so it was an eventful day.
Nutmeg congratulations on adding the last barber half to your set! That is an accomplishment. I spent a few hours on e bay today mostly looking at copper, and put in a few bids and actually won a couple, an 1814 and an 1874. Watched a couple real nice looking 1869 cents sell today. Seems to me that nice coins are bringing real close to the PCGS price guide.

Thanks. The Barber half set was way more expensive to finish than I initially planned years ago starting out. Complete sets were selling for $1,400 but I didn't like the looks of some of the reverse rims. So instead of going for a set already put together, I wanted to do my own. I must say none of my coins have bad looking reverse rims. But all said and done it cost me double what I thought I'd spend. Congrats on getting your 1814 lg. cent. I'm still looking for a classic 1808-1814 large cent for my 7070 type set.
I know what you mean about the reverse rims, that was my focus too with the Barber Halves. Most of my set are VG- F with the tough dates being the ones that were hardest to find nice, yet within my budget. The large cent set I'm working on is well circulated but I aim for nice surfaces and color. What's next for you?
Last night, on eBay, I put in a stupidly high bid on an item for my "secret collection III". The item had spent more than six days with a top bid of $7.50.
In the last 30 seconds it skyrocketed to $104 and my stupidly high bid failed to win the lot!
I am getting early signs of the collector market returning , lots of buying at shows, speaking to national buyers, some indicate the same on that level, and e-bay sales have been better than expected lately. Even have a few collectors returning to the shop to purchase.

Next for me is probably to start seriously looking around for the last four coins I need to complete my Barber dime set [all 4 are key dates]. That set started years ago with the purchase of a decent Library of Coins album.
Had an MS 62 1906 S $20 Gold Liberty in PCGS holder sell for $1877.77 on eBay last night. Started at $.99 My closest competitor is a BUY NOW for $2680 . That's only $800 more
So this friend tells me about a 3 coin fractional set of coins from Russia, that a seller had listed on eBay. He pulled the trigger for $100 "buy now". When it arrived, he found that it was NOT silver (as was advertised). I don't think he contacted eBay to complain about the item not being as described. Can you guess why ?

<< <i>It was probably a rare item, possibly platinum. >>
This is correct, sir. I told him he earned a "YOU SUCK". He was almost embarassed to get the recognition after telling me the story, but this little ballerina set , he said was a perfect gift for his daughter. A good hunter is he.
