Also, my coin shows no hints of a repunched 8 or clashing. Hopefully, someone can explain the strange 5 in the date.
Thanks for the responses.
For 1835 there are two varieties, C-1 & C-2.
Both var. use obv. 1, which is a small date,
as in 1831-2 & has a repunched 5, with extra
outlines plainest within the curve. The L is
baseless.
C-1 uses rev. A, while C-2 uses rev. B.
Breen discusses the repunched 5 when
describing C-1.
Your coin is a C-2 with the ST close & the A in
STATES is high. In C-1 the ST is wide spaced.

What page in Breen are you referring to for a repunched 5?
Thanks in advance.
<< <i>I did read Breen but can't locate reference to the repunched 5, only reference to the repunched 8.

Look in "Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857"
page 362, for 1835 year, in 4 line description of Obverse 1.
Also on page 472, the "Whoops!" section, right column, 6th paragraph down.

Here's an image of another example which was taken
from CoinFacts, with the repunched 5 .
