<< <i>I have a customer who is a P.R.C. native, and his skill at deciphering chops is remarkable. >>
Almost all that I've seen posted on this forum are either current or not too old Chinese characters.
They are easy to decipher because of this.
Now, why certain characters are used, I don't know.
I'd like to know.
have an APP for chopmarks...
Interested myself...

My great uncle was around in Asia and was doing business when Trade dollars were still circulating well after they were minted. As to why they used certain characters, well, I couldn't understand him
What is your core question as you have perked just about all the real experts intrests
<< <i>I would scour ebay (or the postal routes between here and the Cali) for a copy of Rose's book, Its quite good. >>
I seriously hope your copy turns up Crypto, I just can't grasp the reality that the post office may have lost it.
I see most of the Trade dollar experts have chimed in already, but I guess better late than never... If you're looking for info on chopmarded Trade dollars I would suggest a couple of things:
1. Check out some of the registry set collections;
2. Buy a copy of Frank Rose's book on chopmarks. There is often a copy up for auction on eBay.
3. Join the Chopmark Collectors' Club. They have a great newsletter.
For info on #3 or any other question, go ahead and PM me.
