Depends on what you are looking for. See my website for a lot of info. If you have a 75-P, i'm a buyer!

There is a book by Rose..... out of print, but sometimes available on auction sites. Cheers, RickO

Crypto is a good bet. I wrote an article for the LSCC (Liberty Seated Collectors Club) regarding chopmarked rarity based on LSCC member survey of coins owned. Send me a PM and I can get you a copy. David Reimer's collection and TDN's collections are quite good as well. If you are looking for detailed info on what chops mean and look like, I have heard that Rose's book might be good but I've never read it.

Oreville is very good at deciphering the meaning of chops

I have a customer who is a P.R.C. native, and his skill at deciphering chops is re-mark-able. image

<< <i>I have a customer who is a P.R.C. native, and his skill at deciphering chops is remarkable. >>

Almost all that I've seen posted on this forum are either current or not too old Chinese characters.

They are easy to decipher because of this.

Now, why certain characters are used, I don't know.

    I'd like to know.

My great uncle was around in Asia and was doing business when Trade dollars were still circulating well after they were minted. As to why they used certain characters, well, I couldn't understand him image
  • I would scourer ebay (or the postal routes between here and the Cali) for a copy of Rose's book, Its quite good. I know about the market for them some what but not as much as DDR does but he isn't around too much these days but a PM would get a response soon or a later. TDN's site is currently the definitive TD reference out there although bowers book is very good but lacks the presentation and accessibility of the web site.

What is your core question as you have perked just about all the real experts intrests

I've owned a few myself, but do not consider myself an expert. I would like to know what your question is.

I seriously hope your copy turns up Crypto, I just can't grasp the reality that the post office may have lost it. image

    Greeniejr,

I see most of the Trade dollar experts have chimed in already, but I guess better late than never... If you're looking for info on chopmarded Trade dollars I would suggest a couple of things:

    1. Check out some of the registry set collections;
    2. Buy a copy of Frank Rose's book on chopmarks. There is often a copy up for auction on eBay.
    3. Join the Chopmark Collectors' Club. They have a great newsletter.

For info on #3 or any other question, go ahead and PM me.

    David Reimer
