This Weekend's Rips... Summer vacation ‘21 edition

PorkinsPorkins Posts: 605 ✭✭✭
I figured I would take some inspiration from my favorite thread of all time (Fergie's "Unopened Rips"), and post weekly-ish the results of my weekend rippage. I know it won't be anywhere near as cool as Robb's cards, but maybe some can appreciate my meager cardboard. I plan on each Friday posting what's on the ripping block for that weekend, and by Sunday or Monday, updating with photos/scans.

This weekend it was a box of '84 Donruss. What was here was pretty o/c one way or another. Hightlights:

Sorry for bad pics, remember, I'm a noob image Any tips are welcome.
Since my brother and I "re-took" up the hobby we still don't have the holy grail card of my youth thru 2 boxes. Matty, where are you??? More next week...

    Nice cards. Love 84 Donruss
You know that Carter rookie is not really that tough of a card, but every single one I've had has the same centering as yours

    Hi and thanks for posting.

That's kind of interesting that the Matty your looking for (Matt Young error?) hasn't come up, maybe that will make it still hold its position as your grail. It's cool that opening a pack and slowly looking for a card now is just as exciting to some of us as it was back when we were kids doing it.

I also opened up a few packs (7 to be exact) - and only pulled out a Joe Carter (came out exactly like yours. Off center in the same spot) and Andy Van Slyke. I wasnt too dissapointed being that Ive wanted Joe Carters rookie for a little while now.

So from a box rip, thats ALL you got? No Bretts, Gwynns, Rose and as the previous person mentioned - Mattinglys?

    Thanks for looking all.

Foo/Hammered: Absolutely. These are the 3rd and 4th Carter's I've pulled, and other 2 look the same.

Foo, it was a whole box and I did get 2 Bretts, 1 Rose, and 1 Gwynn, I just didn't get a chance to post them

Yep, no trace of Mattingly whatsoever (product was from Steve so no questions as far as I'm concerned). I still have sadly never owned this iconic card of my youth. But, as leftofdial said, maybe that's a good thing, as the chase continues image

I once opened up a box of 82 Donruss and didnt even pull out a Ripken!

Talk about brutal. Although it does have some good players, that whole set is completely worthless without the Ripken. I was at least hoping to pull out 2.

Alright boys... Tonight I'm going to rip these and post highlight pics as I go (sorry no scanner at home):

    image

If you can't see them it's a cello box of 81 Topps baseball and a rack box of 82 Topps football.
And for you unopened pack fiends, yes I am going to check for stars on t/b image

It may be a semi-slow process but let the ripping begin...
    Wish me luck!

Thanks guys... I really am excited about the '81. I've been collecting since '85 and for some reason have always overlooked the 81 set. These will be the 1st 81 packs I have ever opened!!

Ok. Through 10 racks got the previously posted Lott, and these:

Centering is all over the place. Munoz top to bottom, Montanas bottom to top!

    PorkinsPorkins Posts: 605 ✭✭✭
    By the way, looks like it will only be 22 racks for now, as the only decent cards showing on top/bottom were these;

Lott and LT In Actions. Not much but kinda cool. The may come under the rippers thumb sometime. Haven't decided.

    Through 6 more got these:

All in all and despite the centering issues, extremely fun rip!
    4 Montana's
    3 Lott's
    2 Lt's
2 Lt IA's (including 1 still in rack)
    2 Montana IA's
1 Lott IA (still in rack)

So I guess I did alright. See ya next week.

Thanks a lot guys! I'm so glad some are enjoying this besides me. Other than my man daddymc, last night it was crickets chirping!

CSC: I guess I should have clarified. I bought multiple racks at 9 bucks a piece from Steve at BBCE. To my knowledge he doesn't have any complete original boxes in stock right now. Steve sent them in Topps rack boxes in sets of 24, just as they would have been if they were from the factory. Opened a 24 box last night and still have 24 unopened for a rainy day image

80's: Thanks for kind words. I completely agree with you... I think Steve has a great price on these little devils!

    Guys,
This week since I had the stuff from the group rip to bust (which I posted in that thread), I have but this to open:

    image

'83 football box. I am in particular looking for a nice sub-able Allen rook, as the 3 i own are badly o/c. I have already had some luck with Singletary rooks as I've sold a BGS 9.5 for a little over a couple hundred (before I was a convert), and I have another sharp copy waiting to be subbed. Anyway, here we go...
  • Options
    PorkinsPorkins Posts: 605 ✭✭✭
Thru first 9 here's what we got:

    image

Singletary is a little bottom to top but sharp. Sweetness was gum card image

Pickings are definitely slim. Had to go thru 15 more to even get something to post (and they aren't even good)

    image

    Marcus, where are you?
  • Options
    PorkinsPorkins Posts: 605 ✭✭✭
Well it was a fairly disappointing rip, as Mr. Marcus did not make an appearance. Still enjoy it, though, as i was a chilhood fan of Chicago, and did manage to get the key Bears rookies, both of which look nice. Final 9 highlights:

See ya next time and may you all rip well image

    Hey guys,
It's been a long time since I posted a rip (pure laziness), but I thought I might post the 2012 Christmas rippage edition! Will be ripping all packs deep into tonight and between tonight and tomorrow afternoon I plan on posting the highlights.

    image

    The tally:

1 complete box plus 4 packs of '81 football
1 complete box plus 4 packs of '86 football
1 complete box plus 2 packs of '80 Topps hockey
    16 packs of '84 football
8 packs of '82 OPC hockey

    Let's get going!

Nope. Crazy as it sounds, I've got almost a year's worth of rippage building up for a PSA order for Jan. before my membership runs out.

Thanks for all kind words guys!!

Loving all the football rips. Looks like you got quite a few submittable HOFers. Loving the 82 in paticular. Was the first set I collected as a kid. Good luck on all the grades. LMK if you want to move the Singletary. Need a 9 or better for my HOF RC set.
