EDIT: DONE. Andres was the winner.
FEBRUARY FOSSIL GIVEAWAY!
It's time for another giveaway. So here are five nice fossil shark teeth found in dredge spoil material from Saint Simons Sound, Glynn County, Georgia, USA. These are locally found in the spoil heaps by me and a buddy of mine. These particular ones were found by my pal Billy Ridenour, who is a much more successful fossil and treasure hunter than I am. Whether metal detecting or fossil hunting, he always gets the goodies!
Here's what we've got. All of these teeth are millions of years old, so here's your chance to own a piece of "deep time".
1. Isurus hastalis, extinct Broad-toothed Mako shark.
2. Carcharocles megalodon, extinct giant White shark. The biggest and baddest of 'em all. Jaws' long-dead great-great granddaddy, to put it simply. These are the most sought-after of shark tooth fossils and this is just a small and incomplete example, but no fossil collection should be without a Meg or two.
3. Carcharias taurus, the Sand Tiger shark. Still a living species. Popular in big aquariums like Marineland and Sea World for their wicked, curvy teeth. This is of course a fossil specimen. These guys have been around a long time.
4. Hemipristis serra, the extinct "Snaggletooth" shark, a species of weasel shark, and a somewhat scarcer tooth. These have some living descendants, but as is often the case, the fossil species was bigger and badder than its modern counterparts. Popular with collectors, these teeth are primarily found in Florida, I believe, but our Georgia specimens are a little more seldom seen since we don't have as many coastal fossil sites.
5. Galeocerdo cuvier, the famous Tiger shark. Still around today, of course, and one of the largest living species after the Great Whites. We've got some monsters out there off our coast. I saw pictures of one caught just south of here that had to be close to eighteen feet long! These too have been around for millions of years, and this is a fossil tooth.
So... whatcha gotta do to win yourself a small fossil collection?
Simple. Two things.
First, post birthday wishes for my forum friend Dimitri Gotzamanis in Greece (aka "SYRACUSIAN" here on the forums). He just hit the big five-oh, so he's workin' on becoming a fossil himself.
Secondly, post why you think Andrew, aka "Ahrensdad", is a great guy. I know this because he recently gave me a surprise gift, right out of the blue, and I loved it. Someone else ended up loving it (crazy loving it) even more than me, though, so I traded it away. This windfall gift resulted in my going from nothing to being the owner of more than five ounces of silver bullion in less than 36 hours. I offered Andrew a kickback but he politely declined.
So I dedicate this thread to Dimitri and Andrew. Both have been generous and kind souls, and since I've received so much generosity recently it was time to balance the cosmic karma scales a little, if you know what I mean.
Just a minimum of two sentences from you to enter. Happy birthday to Dimitri and Ahrensdad is a great guy. You even don't have to know either of them. Be creative and witty. Amusing entries will score kudos for creativity, but the giveaway will be won randomly.
I'll probably do a drawing sometime on or after Valentine's Day.
Please post just one time.

Cool move by Ahrensdad

I always liked that line by the British Bulldog.
I've already wished Dimitri a Happy Birthday on the Darkside thread started by the shroom, and I think Ahrensdad is awesome because you think he's awesome and I value your opinion

I hit 50 in oct am I a fossil too?
By what Ahrensdad did it is clear hi is a great guy.
Cool fossils. Please count me in.

<< <i>That snaggletooth one is awesome! >>
Though the bigger Megs usually get all the attention, I think that Hemipristis is probably the prize of this particular group.
Gummibear- if you don't win, I'll send you a freebie tooth or two. I'm still enjoying that odd uniface medal I got in one of YOUR giveaways, and my buddy has your car art print on his wall, I'm told.
From one "snaggle-tooth" (this one's over the hill & out of a job) to another, I'd like to wish Dimitri a happy birthday & many, many more!
And whatever came from out of the blue to you from Ahrensdad sounds like a very nice, thoughtful gift - - just what I'd expect from him! So kudos to him on that as well!
As far as the giveaway goes, I originally thought you were going to have 5 different winners. Although the "snaggle-tooth" first caught my eye, once I saw so many others interested, I figured that, as you yourself said in your description "The biggest and baddest of 'em all........no fossil collection should be without a Meg or two" - - that was the one I wanted!
Then I re-read where you said "..... win yourself a small fossil collection", and realized it was for the whole set.
SO........ I sure hope I win, but if I do, could I win just the #2 Megalodon tooth, and let you choose either a runner-up or multiple winners for the remaining teeth? Kinda spread around the joy? (Of course, that's a big assumption in the first place that the random number generator smiles brightly on me anyway.........)
Thanks for the cool giveaway!!

Dimitri/SYRACUSIAN is so old that his momma gave him a dekadrachm for his lunch money (never mind that a deka could probably buy lunch for a whole year or more), and he lost it while walking to school. (Sadly, I haven't been able to get over there to visit with my metal detector).
Syracusian is so old that he took Cleopatra to his senior prom. But then he decided to dump her and so Julius Caesar and and Mark Antony later ended up with his "sloppy seconds".
Or...
Ahrensdad is such a great guy that he singlehandedly built the transcontinental railroad. (All those other laborers were just assistants he hired as stage dressing to disguise his prowess, since he is so modest.) He personally melted down some Brasher doubloons and other gold coins from his collection junkbox, so they could cast the golden spike for the final ceremony.
Ahrensdad is such a great guy that when George Washington cut down the cherry tree, he replanted it. This is why historians sometimes dismiss that story as a myth. It really happened, but Ahrensdad covered for George and when George's father saw the (replanted) tree, he cut George some slack and didn't give him a whuppin', and that's how America was born. So we all owe a debt of gratitude to Ahrensdad.
As for the act of kindness by Andrew, it is further testimony to the kindness and generosity of the great, kind, and helpful people of the forums. LordM practically got me hooked on collecting, and has been so kind to give so much to me for nothing in return. Rob, maybe now you know what it feels like to get so excited when you see something unexpected in the mail, and the joy in not knowing what is in the mystery package, only knowing it is from a genuinely good guy who you know you can trust.

I started the Happy Birthday Dimitri thread, much to his chagrin.
I like the Hemipristis serra tooth.

I was gonna go with some kind of Honest Abe rail-splitting yarn myself, but couldn't think of any (he and Ahrensdad never met 'cause he was assassinated the day before Ahrensdad came to DC), so I just went with George Washington instead.
Three cheers for Ahrensd.
Fine, if you don't want to post the two comments, and let me make you into a talking puppet (LOL), then I'll waive that requirement. Post whatever you want, as long as it's just one post.
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
I think Ahrensdad is a great guy because I trust your judgement!
And Andrew sounds like a great guy!
Way to be Ahrensdad!!! You're one of the reasons this forum is a great place!!! Honestly.
You ain't gotta post about Dimitri or Ahrensdad if you don't want. They both know they're way up on my "Good Guys" list.
Just post once if you wanna get in on this before I wrap it up and do the drawing soon.
Can you believe that I actually thought the picture in the OP had a solid black background? That's how blind I was with the old monitor, which ran way too dark.
I think that Andrew is a great guy because he thinks of other people. Just the fact that someone else's interests are on his mind before the thought of making a buck for himself is a true testament to his great "guy-i-ness".
Thanks.
John

Well, in this case, the LATE bird got the worm. Andres, the last entry, was smiled upon by random.org, and has won.
Congratulations, Andres. Now you can make a set of dentures out of those teeth, haha!
will make an appointment with my dentist once they arrive
