Maybe Topps employees are bidding up these cards to add to the hype. Hype= more cases/boxes/packs sold. ==> I would think thats gotta be illegal...but an incredible idea
There are 13 squirrel cards on eBay as of right now. I think we can officially say this is not a SSP, it is probably inserted at the same rate as the legends variation SPs.
The first squirrel card ended at $611, others seem to be settling around $300.
I am not a case breaker, so I don't know if this is true, but in defense of the people who are auctioning off the squirrel card and make a point to say that you only get the SP, not the base card: They may have it figured into their formula that they only get x number of Schumaker base cards, and that they are already allocated to sets/team sets. If they gave the base card with the SP, it might leave them a card short somewhere.

That's not Billy Spiers. It's George Canale.
Here's the real Billy Spiers and a George Canale card:
I also questioned whether that statement was true, but couldn't think of a good counterexample. The best I came up with was that in the late 1960s/early 1970s, Topps did trophies in hockey sets where the back named the player who won the previous season but the player was not mentioned or pictured on the front. However, Beckett catalogs the cards by trophy name, not by player, so this doesn't really qualify.
Aha! It never occurred to me that wrong photo errors would qualify. My curiosity was mainly directed at whether any others, by design, did not feature the player's face. I think there are some where you can see the player's head, but not their face. The '73 Bench comes to mind, and I'm sure there are others.
BTW, I could see how Topps would make that mistake with Spiers, Canale looks a lot like him in that photo!
wasn't there an Aurileo Rodriquez card back in the 60's that had the bat boy on it....there have been others also but can't remember them all...I may have mispelled Aurileo
Not Topps, but Upper Deck made those 1996 Collectors Choice Play Action Stick-Ums Mystery Base Cards. Basically the background of all but the player and you had to get the matching sticker, with the player on it, to finish the card.
Edit to add photo....
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
When it comes down to it it just a rather ingenious way for Topps to put a different spin on the insert game that has been played since 1991 or so. The "error" or "variation" aspect of these cards adds a little nostalgia to the chase which likely encourages wider and greater interest in these cards and hence greater sales.

It is really funny to do a search on EBAY for completed sales of this card. Every single one went lower then the previous one. This is like watching the trade data of a stock in free fall where every tick is lower.
From the first sale which of course will never get paid for of $612 to $98 and still falling.
Let's be real, a card of a squirrel is never going to hold a ton of value.
Had the Mantle and W photoshopped images been included just on a SP variation of Jeter's card, they might have held a lot of value (perhaps $20 to $30 a card), but those were on every copy of a non-SP card until the factory sets came out.

One more and this baby is back to $300. It will get there before the close is my bet.
That may be even too aggressive now that there are 12 on EBAY.
<< <i>auction #2 states that you'll only get the SSP variation. Don't think for a second that you'll be entitled to the $.01 base card. >>
LOL thought that same thing

There's far fewer base cards on ebay. Maybe the base card is more rare!

Unsurprisingly, here's the feedback left for the $612 one:
