the brutal irony is the same decision they made protected the item(s) from circulation/corrosion etc but with the clasps/holes etc end up ruining the item anyway LOL .

I think it also protects these coins from being cleaned. I oftentimes look at holed coins to get an idea what original, un-messed-with coins look like (aside from the hole).
