OT: Record Collecting

Anyone know a trustworthy record dealer? My son was going through my vinyl collection, that I haven't looked at in 20+ years, and noticed that I have several original shrink-wrapped Police albums. Want to know if I should sell them or play them.

Because albums by the Police sold in large quantities, they're not going be worth a whole lot. But albums in mint condition that are still shrinkwrapped are likely worth a few bucks, maybe even as much as you paid for them originally!

More obscure stuff that is still in demand is going to be worth more money. Some original punk records from the late 70s/early 80s now go for several hundred bucks. (Mass market stuff, not so much.)

If you live in or near a big city you may find a store that trades in vinyl.
Vinyl records or albums are making somewhat of a comeback.
Imports (English,German, ... etc.) half speed masters, picture disc, shaped or colored vinyl will bring more.

Like drooypd said mass produced stuff won't demand a premium.

It's the really obscure stuff with funny names/images or rare early pressings that seem to get cash.

Even your typical 1st issue Led Zeppelin album will be $12-18.

You might try Craig's list or ebay- What you described is not that difficult to obtain- unless you have a DJ pressing, a promo, colored vinyl or a picture disc

Unless they are imports or 180 gram pressings, etc., Police albums aren't going to be worth selling.
Considering the CD remasters were of dubious quality, I'd just hold onto the vinyl if I were you.

Ebay would be your best venue for selling vinyl and you can check active and completed sales to see which are worthy to list.

As a collector of recorded music, I'd have to agree with this. As mentioned in the 'you think coin dealers are bad?' thread, the spread/ mark up on records is for the most part, not in favor of the seller....image

I looked into this a couple of years ago... decided it was not even worth the effort. Cheers, RickO
