Interesting 1917-S Two Feather Buffalo Nickel

I found this yesterday while looking through some old coin books I bought. It appears to be an FS-401 "Two Feather" Buffalo with some serious lamination flaws on the obverse and reverse. At least I think it's lamination problems and not PMD. Please let me know if you think it's PMD.

Interesting coin, and a date in the series I like.
I would agree it is likely NOT PMD. This series is rife with coins with planchet flaws.

Definitely laminations. Nice coin, though. Congratulations!

Thanks all. I don't collect these so I put it up on ebay just to see what it would bring. First Two Feather I've found and with the laminations it's cool coin for someone that collects this series. Curious what it might bring too.

Nice coin, my eye wants to paint the center quill for the 3rd feather into that obverse image. Is there actually anything there or is my optical system just working overtime?

I decided to keep it for now. Ricko got in my head image

There really is nothing there. Totally polished out. Interesting variety that can be found in a few different years.

"A few different years" is an understatement. According to my count there are 33 different date-mint combinations for which a 2-feather Buffalo exists. That is exactly half of the 66 pieces in the Buffalo nickel set.

I believe the full Buffalo nickel series contains 64 coins. But there are a fair number of different date/mm combinations that exhibit this die variety.

I still have it. I found a 21-S two feather as well. It's in poor condition and cleaned but it sure looks like a two feather to me:

Our friends "across the street" won't attribute ANY of the abraded dies except the 1937-D 3 legged.
