This is a VERY interesting Lincoln.... maybe with some history behind it.

I found this searching today. It would seem that this penny was punched just once with the exact logo used at Ford. I did some research and found this:

"In 1918, with the war on and the League of Nations a growing issue in global politics, President Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, encouraged Ford to run for a Michigan seat in the U.S. Senate. Wilson believed that Ford could tip the scales in Congress in favor of Wilson's proposed League. "You are the only man in Michigan who can be elected and help bring about the peace you so desire," the president wrote Ford. Ford wrote back: "If they want to elect me let them do so, but I won't make a penny's investment." Ford did run, however, and came within 4,500 votes of winning, out of more than 400,000 cast statewide"

I wonder......

It is a very cool counterstamp that is seen with some frequency on eBay. Never knew that there might be some political connection.

  • Regulator, Have you seen both the 1918 penny and the "Ford" stamp on one?

Peaceman- I may have some images saved on a hard drive, so I would have to check. If I recall correctly, they are earlier Lincoln cents with the same counterstamp.

Hopefully SavoySpecial will see this thread and chime in.

I started collecting in Detroit around 1960, and over several years saw the script "Ford" counterstamp on many coins as late as Franklin halves. Don't think they had anything to do with the 1918 elections.

Tom/CaptHenway is correct.....i see many of these on mid-20th century coins (WWII era WLHs, Franklin Halves, etc.).....sometimes they are found with a broken flourish on the 'F' (yours is the unbroken variety, obviously)

Brunk notes that a 1958 Numismatist article mentioned that specific coins bearing this countermark could be redeemed by Ford Motor Company for a new automobile, but this has since been debunked

neat coin but i dont think it has the political connection that you are attempting to make

That is very interesting and a very cool story. I hadn't heard of this before, nor had I seen one of these Ford counterstamped coins. Thank you for sharing it!

This piece is a $15 coin, but I read this story and had to bid. I lost. I probably shoulda bid more but had no idea I was going up against an "automobilia" collector.

Never saw one with the counterstamp three times. Never heard the 1933 World's Fair story before either, but it doesn't explain why the c/s was used as late as Franklin halves.

I found a 1950s dated Jefferson nickel with the Ford stamp on it in a roll search a few years ago, obviously someone in the tool and die dept at Ford was having fun at that late date.

This is pretty interesting. I'd never heard of a "Ford" counterstamped anything, but from the last few comments, sure sounds like it was exactly specific to the year 1918.

Still, I thought that SLQ was interesting from a historical perspective, however, it's looking like it may not have been part of an accurate story.
