Fireball Toned Morgans - If you got'em, Post 'em.

Well, I don't actually have this one anymore but one of the coolest I have seen. Some textile on it to boot.

I wanna see your best. Come on AB and Lloyd. image

Wow, that is nice!!! Too bad it's not in 5 holder with a gold bean, it would probably be worth a couple hundred G's. image

Great pics of a sweet looking Morgan as I love the pull away on the obverse/reverse patina. image

    This is too much fun.
Is it OK to post another? If not, my apology. if so, here is a raw Morgan I picked up and sent to PCGS. Graded MS64 (a bit surprising. I thought it would only go MS63):

Hm, but both seem equally attractive unless you're suggesting the 63 is questionably MA?

I've been hunting for a Textile for a little over six months with no success!
    Those are outstanding.

And... the hunt continues. . .

  • This is the closest coin that I have. It's a little more subtle, but still has vivid coloration. The coin, in a rattler holder, was recently photographed by Todd Pollock (BluCC Photos).

PCGS barely notices strike on Morgans in the 63/64 range. Strike is about 5th on the priority list when grading classic coins.

Besides surface marks and luster, what else is considered in grading classic coins ahead of strike quality?

    In my experience:

    1) surface frost/sheen on devices
    2) luster
    3) overall eye appeal
    4) bagmarks
    5) hairlines, rub, etc

    THEN strike.
  • thank you tdn.

Eye appeal is subjective so it should not factor in. Thats why PCGS has no real standards and its all a shell game. Each grader has differnt ideas as to the eye appeal of a given coin. image

The basics of eye appeal are not subjective. Vibrant toning beats dark toning. Electric blue is always attractive. Periphrial toning with light centers are a plus. Just because a few object, doesn't mean that the market doesn't predominantly appreciate certain looks.
