Jefferson Nickel Full Steps Mirage

This coin is killing me. When I view the steps under a glass, they appear full albeit very shallow in depth. When I take a photo of the coin, bridges appear from everywhere. Has anyone else ever had this problem when viewing their Jefferson Nickels?

Please tell me you if you think this coin has any shot at getting a full step designation? Please vote in the attached poll and share your comments in the thread.

I agree. I just don't see a chance in either photo.

I don't think so either, but I am curious as to what year and mint it is.

May as well make it a guess the date!

(I voted maybe -- you say it looks fs in hand and the graders don't use pictures so you get the benefit of the doubt here).

    I am going to make a wide guess ... S mint. 46-54.

From the photo . . . Step 3 alone would be enough to kill it. Step 4 is just partially there, and Step 5 is non-existent.

But, from the photo. I suppose if it was in a slab that obscured the steps, or some odd thing happened??? But if this is a raw coin and you are considering it, I think I'd decline sending it in for FS designation.

I'll bet you are. Probably even more curious is why a collector who usually doesn't care about strike or steps is suddenly interested. Let some more people beat it up and then I will show a photo of the entire coin.

Ok, then this has to be a 64-D.

I can't see you caring on a ton of other dates AND it can't be a 68 or 69. doesn't have the hand cut left door.

I'll guess it's a '63-P and I'm with the majority, the steps do not look to be struck up enough to get a designation from either PCGS or NGC.

Well I can confirm that it does not currently have a full step designation. However, it resides in an NGC holder and was encapsulated prior to NGC's decision to recognize 5 full steps. The seller described the coin as full steps and under a glass, he has a point. And there is no chance he took any photos of the coin so he only knew what he could see with his own two eyes. After all the replies to this thread die down, I will post the photo of the coin and the seller's photos and all will become clear.

As for the date, you guys are way, way, way off! Nobody is even close.

Some of the toning makes me believe a war nickel (???)

Okay, I took a photo with the lighting from the bottom rather than the top and there is a considerable difference. Compare the two photos below.

    imageimage

I have circled the area under the 3rd pillar between the 3rd & 5th steps which seems to be the most problematic. I understand that there are also other problem areas in this photo as well but I think this photo shows what I am talking about. Based on the angle of the lighting, the appearance of the steps changes while in hand it appears to have full steps under 5X magnification.

    Any thoughts?

  • CDN just did an article on this. Based on what I learned, I don't think it fits the description.

It is indeed a war nickel, but not just any war nickel. Here is the E-Bay seller's photo.

    image

Not surprisingly, I was the only bidder on the coin. I knew at first glance that the blue area in the seller's photos were actually iridescent toning of most likely pink, yellow, or green. Turns out I was right. The seller stated in his listing that he submitted the coin for grading prior to the date that NGC started grading coins with the 5FS designation but to his eyes the coin had 5 full steps. Based solely on the slab generation, his story was plausible. And as I have stated, the steps appear better in hand under a glass but I don't think it will get full steps from either TPG. Either way, I have been waiting for an NGC MS67 1943/2-P to hit the market for years and got this one without a fight. I paid a fair price for the coin if the steps were not full and had a financial free roll if the steps were full. Anyway, here is my photo of the coin. I love E-Bay sellers who can't take photos!

    image

It would probably be an MS66 in a PCGS holder but that does not matter to me in the least. My NGC war nickel registry set is now complete with all MS67's.image

LOL, the beat it up comment wasn't directed at anyone specifically. I just knew by looking the poll that the forthcoming posts were going to be resounding NO's. They were!

Thanks, I waited for a long time for an NGC MS67 1943/2-P to hit the market. Can you imagine the war that would have ensued if it have good photos?
