..The new age of the Common coin..

The only way a coin today can become a true collectable is that it circulate one way or another.I remember when I started collecting coins that I used household Morgan and peace Dollars to go to the bank and exchang for rolls of Lincoln Cents.I would replace the cents and return to the bank for other silver dollars..
Nowadays we need a coin with a high value to circulate..and consider it a true collectable such as the Morgan or Peace Dollars.
To bad you can't get the Silver American Eagle from your local banks but you can acquire them from other sources such as coin shops..pawn shops..and dealers etc. who deal in bullion sales or trades. It is not difficult to obtain these pieces. What is different today is that we have a another service industry that authenticates our collectable coins. It's not a bad thing mind you but don't overlook the fact of what's inside their product.
As always mintage mostly takes precedent over condition.Given that fact these later ms70 coins will have to give way to earlier years of lower or leaner years of production. The TPG's will still be there for authentication for modern ways of forgery.
In the end basically the mint will not produce a Precious Metal coin for regular circulation as we once knew it.This is the only way today in Modern collecting to collect a ..Circulating Bullion Coin..

Jefferson nickels (altough not normally thought of as bullion) have around 5 cents of metal in them.
$0.0562392 is the melt value for the 1946-2012 nickel on January 20, 2012.

I don't know what you mean by "true collectible", but I have my own definition of "good collectible". A "good collectible", by my definition, was never produced or sold for the intention of being a collectible. It was made for general purposes and it became collectible. A good illustration of that are comicbooks. The best comicbooks were intended to be read and thrown away. The specially made "collectible" ones, with the polybags and chromium covers are mostly worthless.

Pulling it back to coins, a high grade SMS 2009 Jefferson Nickel isn't worth as much as a 2009 Jefferson Nickel of the same grade. The business strike was never intended to be collectible, and over the long term, will probably do much better...even though they were hoarded. (IMHO).

Why do people keep saying this?
How can you define "true collectable"?
People collect classic cars, and car models. They collect historical documents and copies of historical documents. Coins that are circulated, and coins that never circulate. Some people even collect bugs, kinds of dirt, you name it.
They are all true collectables because people collect them.
It isn't right, and doesn't make a bit of sense at all to say that uncirculated coins aren't collectables...
And this is coming from someone who does not collect moderns as you're defining them.

A true collectible is what the collector defines as desirable. You are welcome to your definition, but please do attempt to impose your views on me. I collect what I like, and they are true collectibles...be they coins, firearms, or belly button lint. Cheers, RickO

Exactly the definition I would use.
