Boeing Coin Show report 1/21/12

I will try to get pics later, just got home and have to head out to coach my son's basketball game.
Anyway, spent about 3 hours longer than I anticipated, and bought hardly anything, but immensely enjoyed meeting up with some folks and chatting with a few dealers....
First off, out of the gate, met up with LakeSammman (too many "M"s...always makes me think I am misspelling his screen name) about 15 minutes prior to the show opening. Had my son with me and I think he was a little intimidated by Lakes....as he kept speaking very softly and Lakes couldn't always hear him. My son is shy, but we are usually around folks he knows so I forget how softspoken he can be. Lakes was a super guy and gave my son the sampleslab from the FUN Luncheon! For my son, it was cool because he shares a birthday with Lincoln and the sample was a 2010-D shield lincoln. Goes into the "keep forever box" for him.
Had a great chat with Lakes while waiting to get into the show.
Once in, we split up and walked around. Ran into Gil (Swampboy). Always a pleasure to chat with this gentleman. My son scored again as Gil gave him a basketball coin from Lithuania I believe. 2011 basketball champs. My son enjoys basketball so that was also cool and he likes the coin (showed it to mom as soon as we got home). Thanks again, Gil.
Then, a little more walking around, bumping into Lakes a few more times as he kept saying "nothing here...no doilies, no cool slabs, hmmm.....gonna look again, but so far nothing".
I was looking for 1/2 cents we need but did bump into something I called Lakes over for....I'll let him talk about his items.
At the time we appointed, we sat down in the back and had a little show and tell. Lakes has some cool stuff. He handed Swampboy and I a 2c piece with a "neat label" and asked us to guess why it was so neat. I think I got it right...and it was kind of cool as most slabbed coin folks wouldn't think to look for it. The man doesn't just have doilies, he has non-morgan, non-mercury dime doilies! Coins in doilies I could only imagine even in a non-doily!
Gil has a nice 3c silver....those things are cool, I admit. Small. Very very small, but pretty cool. I apprecaited seeing it
I was able to show some of my coins as well. I had hit the SDB before our snow storms, thankfully, to get some coins out to show. Given his background with IHCs, I was feeling really good that I got some compliments from Lakes on my IHC proofs. Swampboy does copper as well and liked them as well, so I was feeling pretty good with these coins (I don't have a lot, but try to get what I think are nice, and reasonably priced, examples over the last 8+ years).
Showed them my toned SAEs (not all, just some dupes that I may sell at some point soon, so I won't post those here) and then, for the coup de grace....I pulled out a couple of the coins I REALLY like.....2 DOG coins I got from RYK (these went over well!) and then the 55/55DDO I bought from Mark Feld a few years back in NGC MS63BN and crossed into PCGS MS63BN and the 1793 1/2c in PCGS VF25 CAC that Mark helped me get last year at auction. Those are all coins I plan to leave to my son down the road so getting the affirmations that I did from these guys on these coins really makes me feel good about them.
Also showed my Fugio I got a couple of years back from CommonCents05 (Paul) and that was liked and the Mass 1788 cent in PCGS XF45 CAC I got free with a CRO hat I bought a year ago
Then, after awhile, we split up again, my son was a bit tired (getting up too early to play xbox will do that to ya I guess) and stayed there, and I walked around talking to some dealers I know and showing some hard times tokens I got from an uncle to an EAC dealer (Dan Bailey). He IDed them for me, and gave me some info. They aren't valuable, but they are pretty cool....particularly the Washington bust one.
Just after this, Lakes walked by and said "Over there is SeattleSlammer", so, I of course, walked up from behind and just said "Going to avoid me for another show SeattleSlammer?"
He turned around, we introduced ourselves, and then met up for another show and tell about 10 minutes later.
Great guy with some great coins as well. He had also just purchased a coin from the same dealer I mentioned earlier but I will let him talk about his stuff.
I LOVED the look of his gold dollar! That's awesome!
We chatted for awhile and WTCG walked by.
I yelled his name and he came over and we all chatted.
Then, we broke off again and my son and I did the circuit one more time. Surprisingly, to me, NEN had a table. Some excellent coins, but no one was behind the table. I have bought from them and was looking forward to meeting face to face, but, alas, was not to be.
A few tables down, saw someone who retired from Boeing and only sets up and Boeing shows. He had an old (small) ANACS sample slab from 2002 with a 2002 Ohio SHQ. I asked how much and he just gave it to my son. Really nice guy. Bought toned 1/2 $ from him for my son's dansco as well. Nice chatting for awhile too.
Then, back to the original dealer I had mentioned above and almost, so very close, almost bought a PCCI (larger slab) MS65 SAE that had started toning. These larger slabs are pretty cool. Marked at $80 but would have given me a discount. I mulled it over but didn't buy (coin was at least a MS68 if not a MS69. No reason the slab had MS65...but the grade doesn't matter on those.
Then, before leaving, ran across Bill Wolverton of Pahrump coins. Showed us a handful of toned morgans and made my son a deal on a brilliant 1881-s (marked MS63) with the most subtle, but flashy, toning. Personally, I wouldn't have bought it as I have trouble seeing toning like that, but my son wanted it and the price was ok, so I let my son buy it from him.
So, to start the day, we got there before 10am. We didn't leave until about 3pm or a tad later. My son likes coins but isn't head over heels to them so this was a stretch for him, but between playing with my Windows tablet and listening to us chat and eavesdropping on us talk coins, he actually enjoyed the whole day and not just a few minutes! Thanks guys!
It was also fun listening to him and SeattleSlammer "negotiate" a coin sale.....I showed SS a coin I picked up raw (toned morgan) from a local shop and then PCGS slabbed it MS62+. I didn't slab it for the grade but because I think the toning is really cool. I knew it was 63 at best if not 62. SS was interested and I am borderline selling it and didn't have a price in my head. He offered a price, I asked my son, and my son just kept upping him by ~$25 every time he said "yeah, I could do that".....heh....my son. I just shook my head. At the end, we didn't sell it as I wasn't sure, but if I go to sell it I will make sure SS knows and has a chance at it.
Again, all in all, great day and really, only because of talking to the folks I mentioned above. Thanks guys!

JK, great report.
You really stretched your son out for five hours at a coin show?
Great talking to you, Gil, Tim and Wei.
Thanks for letting me drool over your stash...the 55 DDO Lincoln is spectacular--love its luster and green speckled toning. What a sweet and eclectic bunch of coins you brought......proof Indians with pop, dirty gold, smooth as butter Fugio and Mass, lovely cap half cents, and a mind blowing toner proof Roosie just to name a few. Great stuff....and I still don't believe you when you say you're cheap!
All in all a fun time and a well above average show, especially for the northwest!
As for NEN, I was surprised to see them in the past (I saw them plenty when I was in Boston) and was told that his son goes to school in the area, so he combines a visit with the show.
If you ever need to sell that green 55-DDO, let me know - I've been looking for a cool birthyear coin.
Maybe next year? I hope so....
Thank you again for sharing for those of us who couldn't make it...

I just got home from dinner w/ friends after the basketball game and no time for pics tonight but I did notice that Lakesammman did post the pics of his new pickups in his thread (we crossposted our show reports as we both looked for an existing one but, seeing none, created our own at the same timeframe...just mine was more wordy (thanks for noticing, RYK
Tempted to go back tomorrow for the SAE in the PCCI holder to go with my Morgan in the PCCI holder, but may have too much to do around the house (too many branches knocked down from the stormy week).
If anyone local can make it, it was actually a pretty good show. Some things for most everyone and the Boeing Coin Club put on a nice show. I appreciate that. Dealers were all very friendly and I really appreciated the ones that made my son feel like an actual person/collector in his own right, which he is, rather than ignoring "a kid". Even dealers we browsed, but didn't buy from, were very friendly and cordial and I really wanted to buy, so I kept looking.
And, SS & Lakes.....I'll keep you both in mind on the 55DDO but like I said, I do plan to hand that one down to my son
For those that haven't seen it before, here is the Truview on it:

Here are some quick pics of the 2 coins my son picked up. Lighting isn't great and just a quick crop and upload.
The 1881-S morgan is weird with the toning.....at one angle, it is almost like there is NO toning and the surface is just super slick looking. At another angle, you can see the toning (tried to get some shown in the pic and used a larger pic for it). Purchase price wasn't that of spot on the morgan, but it was ok since the boy wanted it.
