I've always had a "thing" for the first and last large cents. I've owned at least one example of a Chain cent since I was in undergraduate school. My first one was a Chain AMERI. (S-1) in Poor-1. Some might have called it Fair-2, but the date had been given a little "help" to make it readable. There was no doubt that it was a genuine Chain Cent however. I sold it many years ago for $475, whcih was probably too cheep even than.

The Chain you posted was one of my favorites I ever catalogued, with a provenance as long as my arm.
Benjamin Collins, who owned that piece from 1891 to 1919, probably wouldn't have liked your 1857 cent all that much though. His stated color preference? "Any fixed color, light olive preferred, though black or dark very acceptable. Red secondary which, though beautiful, will not stay put."

(and PS: I hope you do better someday than Henry Beckwith did when he sold that Chain cent in 1923. He lost $70 on it! Given what a certain Sheldon-4 just brought, I think you're safe ...)
