Just picked this up for a low amount for a kick-around example. The coin totally confuses me, the detail is AWESOME. The hole, if it's contemporary, seems to be cut almost too perfect. so I figured, maybe it's a red herring to distract and it's really a fake, but I dont think so. it weights 26.7 g, sizes correctly and rings like silver. maybe a contemporary fake? you'll see what I mean in a second.
anyways, the images:
said almost too clean hole.
I mean, if it was holed a long time ago, it was meant to be hung someplace or worn, but check out the detail, this thing was not hanging on a barn like some colonial holed coins were. so, why would someone hole a near unc coin and then protect it over it's lifespan, otherwise, from wear?
WONDERFUL detail in places. UNCY almost. I fell in love the the quality of the sun-face.
lovely die cracks. is there a shadow of an undertype?
the reverse, much worse off than the obv. someone really rubbed this up. denoting the color the coin, this isn't honest wear. I saw cleaned and lightly retoning in spots.
Now, check this. die cracks around the peripheral are ok, but is this another crack around the tree? I know cast coins can have raised imperfections from the device/field transfer. I dont know why this "crack" bothers me.
anyway, for me the price was right (round 70) to have something in my junque with this design, so it's staying with me, but I just want to know if someone knows I'm looking at a fake, otherwise, I cant get my head around the GREAT detail but harsh surfaces (one side only) and a hole which doesn't make sense.
you, the jury, have the case now. if nothing else this gave me a chance to use my camera!

You are definitely looking at a fake, but I will reimburse the $70 and take it off your hands.
