Snapshot of history

image

I imagine this coin's journey is not unlike the other 360,649 Peace Dollars minted in Philadelphia in 1928. It was born in a nation still recovering from the Great War- a war that for the first time brought images of carnage and death to American families via film, motion pictures, and newsreels. Its design in 1921 commemorated the restoration of peace and the beginning of healing. This one particular coin's journey didn't advertise peace though, since it chose to stay hidden in a bank vault. In that dark vault it missed the peaceful transition of power from Calvin Coolidge to Herbert Hoover and escaped participation in the inevitable commerce resulting from the nation's widespread prosperity. If this coin could talk, one would understand its prescience and reason for hiding. It missed the stock market crash of 1929, which helped fully usher in the Great Depression and one of the darkest times in our country's history. Lady Liberty's face remained unmarred, while many a family were destroyed. Eighty-four years later, it has arrived in my collection. Though I can't tell her the world is a better place, I can tell her story.

This is my first real photo try. It was tough heh. White balance probably a tad off. Any opinions?

Great narrative and great looking '28 Dollar!

One reason I collect circulated 19th Century Type is that I like to imagine what stories it holds as it worked its way in and out of pockets, purses, coin trays, and bank bags.

Such a beautiful strike and luster!
The little set of dings on the neck though (along with the other misc. chatter) will keep this key date out of the GEM category but that's cool: own the best MS64 around!

    Nice 28!

According to Burdette, all 1928 Philly dollars were struck between April 13 and April 20.

Yours exhibits a very nice strike. Find a 34-S like that and you're on your way.
  • That's a beautiful coin. congrats!
