too much ego and/or lazy?

Is Lagriffoul the designer's name? The design has so much potential yet the whole thing is ruined IMO by the giant designer name which is presented almost as if it is part of the design.

  • Looks like a couple of posters could be doing with some history lessons,it is legendary in europe the capacity for italian surrender, not so much the French.A commen joke from europe is along the lines of how many gears does an italian tank have , answer: 1 ..reverse
The French are much more well known for their resistence.

The French have never won a war led by a Frenchman.
  • I have doubts to that , heres a saple of wars the french were in and emerged on the winning side.Id imagine there's a frenchman or two involved somewhere.
List of major wars France have won

    Wars of Charlemagne (768-814)
    Norman Conquest of England (1066)
    First Crusade (1096-99)
    Hundred Years' War (1337-1453)
War of the Holy League (1508-16)
    Franco-Spanish War (1635)
    Franco-Dutch War (1678)
    War of the Reunions (1683-84)
War of the Quadruple Alliance (1718-20)
War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48)
    American Revolutionary War (1775-1783)
French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) (this is not the French Revolution)
War of the First Coalition (1793-97)
War of the Second Coalition (1799-1802)
    War of the Oranges (1801)
War of the Third Coalition (1803-06)
War of the Fourth Coalition (1806-07)
War of the Fifth Coalition (1809)
    Greek War of Independence (1821-30)
    French Conquest of Algeria (1830-47)
    Crimean War (1853-56)
    Second Opium War (1856-60)
Second Italian War of Independence (1859)
    Mandingo Wars (1883-98)
    Sino-French War (1884-85)
    First Franco-Dahomean War (1890)
    Second Franco-Dahomean War (1892-94)
    Franco-Siamese War (1893)
    Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901)
    Wadai War (1909-11)
    World War I (1914-18)
    Rif War (1920)
    World War II (1939-45)
    Gulf War (1990-91)

  • Sheesh man, lighten up. That was a tongue in check reference to Napoleon and Joan of Arc, the greatest and best known French military leaders, neither of whom are Frenchmen.

Other than those two, almost no one can name another successful French military commander. I can't even think of one off the top of my head.

And by the way, most of those wars you've listed are not French military victories, and certainly not victories led by a French commander. At best, they are allied victories with the French riding on the back of the wagon.

Any comment that selects a group (French, in this case) for insult, probably shouldn't be made in the first place on a public forum....especially since there are members from there, and members who live there.

But as you state so eloquently, whatever. Let's just try to keep the discussion mature and civil, that's all I'm saying.

Lots of French coins have the designer's name prominently displayed.

    From way back when:

I find that to be much more subtle.

De Gaulle and Petain are the first 2 that come to mind.

  • LOL. I guess only regulars here get to tell French jokes without being accused of "bashing" and told to leave.

And by the way scotty, the two generals you cited from WWI and WWII hardly count. Petain fought the Germans to a standstill at Verdun in WWI, but he was also the head of Vichy France and collaborated with the Germans in WWII, for which he was convicted of treason and sentenced to death.

Without US intervention and liberation, France would have lost both wars. Your reply reflects your ignorance of the subject.

I would suggest you take a few courses in political science. For now, you'll do yourself a favor in keeping your opinion to yourself!

Lol - in short it's a nice coin image

It just bums me out to see people on such globally-focused forum bash other nationalities.

Sure we can all enjoy a Belgian joke once in a while image

I like the design of the coin, but yes the designers name is a wee bit too prominent. It is wonderful that France still has Marianne as the ideal of liberty. Too bad the USA gave up on Miss Liberty years ago and replaced her with posthumous politicians.
