Barrons: The cleanest dirty shirts ...

The Barrons roundtable has more than a few colorful quotes. I went through the Market Watch site to get to the article. I believe a direct link requires a paid subscription. Yes, it is a bunch of rich white guys shooting the bull, but these guys can and do move markets. Whether they are showing any real cards, or just writing for the public to manipulate them, well you guys know my view.

Any way back to some colorful quotes:

Oscar Schafer:
The U.S. economy will continue to bumble along.

Bill Gross:
.... when you get down to zero interest rates, things start to change. The world changes from Newton to Einstein with regard to the physics of money. ...

You have to invest in the cleanest dirty shirts ...

Felix Zulauf [on what happens next in Europe]
The banking system goes bust. Assume Greece won't repay anything ...

I have been coming to the U.S. for about 40 years. In the past few years I have detected a loss of optimism.

Jim Rogers:
I operate by several maxims. One is that the world doesn't end often ...

Marc Faber:
It would be best for all governments to cut spending by 50%.

On another optimistic note, World War III will occur in the next five years ... [yikes!!!!]

Mario Gabelli:
I make peace, not war. China is more important than Germany and France combined in terms of global GDP.

[stock market prediction: market will] finish the year unchanged. [to which Gross bets him a steak dinner giving Gabelli -10% to +10% and taking the wings and they shake on it.]

Joseph Cohen:
Demand for industrial metals might also be good because of the growth in emerging economies. ...

Fred Hickey:
Gold will rally, then have a seasonal selloff. By the end of the year it could be up 15%

I like the Bill Gross quote. (Einstein/Newton) Zero interest rates are weird.

I'm not sure if Feliz Zulauf is reading things right in the US. At least among people who are young and tech savvy, I find a lot of optimism. Maybe he is talking to NY financial types, but in Silicon Valley or Seattle, I think things are pretty upbeat.

I share your skepticism about whether some of these guys are giving their real opinions, or just trying to move the markets.

Gross is probably right about the physics of money, but I think it is going from Einstein to Newton - the opposite direction than what he says.

Either that, or we are going from Einstein to Hawking - I'm still not sure which.

    I like Jimmy Rogers' quote.

Regarding the fella who mentioned industrial metals,

Asia has been buying up a lot of recyclers on the West Coast. Metal is a very manipulated market. Recently the price for car bodies dipped from about $380/ton to $240 ton.

My little birdies, tell me that by the end of February....car bodies will be $400-500 a ton. Not #2 iron but car bodies, which have high grade lightweight steel in them.

I know a little about metal. If this holds true, the price of steel is skyrocketing. U.S. steel makers couldn't have asked for a better Christmas present.
    Have a nice day
