10 years ago, I bought this SAE and forgot about it

I stashed it away in the kraft envelope that the dealer put it in, and put it into a shoebox with a whole bunch of other stuff.
The box lay undisturbed under a layer of dust and empty mint boxes.
About a week ago, I was frantically looking for some other paperwork, I saw the shoebox and when I looked inside, this is what I saw:



Oddly enough, the reverse, which was interestingly enough in the same kraft envelope, has only the usual reddish/brown toning showing on the rim as though it had been in an album.

Even though it appears that there was a liquid on the SAE (area above IN GOD WE TRUST), it was never dipped (by me), it was a B&M dealer, so I doubt he dipped it, so if there was any liquid applied to this SAE, it was at the mint.

Just thought I'd post a pic.

Looks like a number of them I have seen, that I would consider NT.
The spot you think was a liquid on it, I have seen on some others and I think it is where some milkspotting would otherwise occur. It isn't a MONSTER toner, but I like the look as it has progressed over time and looks to still have some nice luster.

Any idea why obverse and reverse would look so different when they were subject to the exact same environment for the same amount of time?

The reverse if pretty nearly white with only rim toning.

It could be as simple as the reverse was semi sealed against the container while the obverse had air exposure. Cheers, RickO

I think that's it exactly. That and the exposure to smelly shoes in your closet.

if it was laying flat on the one side just the weight of the coin could have been enough to make the difference.

Just like some of the Monster Morgan toners.........some are fantastically toned on one side and almost pure white on the other side.
That's why I can't understand when the ASE's that are toned only on one side get body bagged for AT.........doesn't make
sense...Morgan come this way why are they ok?

No one body bags a Monster toned obverse Morgan and blast white reverse.

Posting here was not a slick way to try to sell it. At this time it's not for sale, I just thought I'd post what I thought was an unusual toning pattern.

Hearing some of the explanations for the one sided toning pattern sure makes it seem explainable though. I wish I had taken more care to note
which side was up when I first removed it. It would certainly lend credence to the explanations noted here.

Very legitimate toning pattern. As I have said many times before . .this is the way a .999 silver 'coin' tones. Very typical coloration and pattern. 100% the way you described it.

Now . . . you all can debate ad infinitum whether that is AT or NT. I don't care. I am just stating I know the pattern and it was non-deliberate, if that means anything at all in this debate.
