If you want to watch and hear one of the most remarkable stories about one of the greatest "qui

You have to go to YouTube and to see Kevin Lipton tell a hell of a story!

Kevin spoke at the Rare Gold Coin Club at the Chicago ANA in 2011. If you don't know who Kevin is, he was called the "Wonder Kid" for years because he was dealing as a pro from age 14, working free-lance for some of the biggest names in the country. He was almost always given no limits as a buyer, as a teenager in an era when there was no grading! He's been doing this since 1975 (still in school), he's handled just about EVERY rarity that has ever sold, he had years when the coin biz was terrible when he was the ONLY bidder on entire auctions, every lot!! And to make it more interesting, he's one of the funniest story-tellers you'll ever hear...with a memory that is historic. He's been Kevin Lipton Rare Coins (wholesale) for 25-30 years?

There's 4 segments...this was a really fascinating talk, and no one wanted him to stop. You will learn some of the most interesting thngs about this biz, hobbby and passion if you have the time. image

here's part ONE... Kevin Lipton's Story

    Thx for posting.

I have heard stories about Mr. Lipton, which I will NEVER put in writing, but if I get tipsy enough at a coin show they might come out image

CSaurus...No doubt KL is easily as colorful a character as there is in the business and he hides NOTHING. Remarkably, as outrageous as he could be when he was younger, his reputation as a "kid" with integrity always superceeded his partying and wildness. It's still amazing to see how one crazy, brilliant kid has utmost respect from every one of he biggest people in the coin world. He helped make some of them what they are now....and he did and does VERY well to this day...as a wholesaler.

Tim, you know what I mean..."quiet" in the sense that very few people in the collector end knows him. You witnessed his talk...pretty remarkable!

Ian Russell and I share tables with Kevin several times a year. A brilliant, experienced and entertaining persona Kevin is.

Because he doesn't deal with the public nor with just anybody he's one of those major players most collectors have never heard of.

Just having fun - it was a very entertaining talk.

I ran into Kevin back in NY once at a Sotheby's American art auction - had a nice chat - his interests are much wider than just coins. image

I remember seeing KL walk into an auction in the 1980's with a young lady on each arm. I was impressed and at the time didn't know who he was. But That never happened to me. image
Didn't seem to distract him from business either.

Possibly my favorite anecdote was how a long shot futures bet on the Forty-niners financed a couple of
    expensive gold pieces....... how appropriate!

So glad some of you watched it. Talk about a self-made success! From the son of a Kosher butcher in Paramus, NJ to one of the biggest, most trusted wholesaler in the country. Halperin said "he's the ONLY person we'd trust" (in a huge deal). And Kevin saved him $4 milliion by outfoxing the lawyers!! image

Kevin is a few years older than me (edited to add- oops, I was born in 1958, so he's just a kid!), and when I started working for a dealer in NJ in 1978, I heard a lot about him. Mainly, that he was, yes, a wonder kid.

    Thanks for the link.

That was not an issue at the Eliasberg sale. I believe it's "market price". He was high bidder twice. image

What about that Blue Moon guy?
  • Don't make me post pictures again guys - proving coin "geeks" can be lady's men!!! (Keep this post related to....coins). Anyway, find the time and watch the KLipton video... it is for starters very interesting, and inspiring for those of you who are currently down in personal life and/or business... (BTW, look for me in the video, part 1, around 10:20 when the camera backs away. I am on the left near the fireplace, with my left arm "dangling" off the arm of my chair. LOL )

Before this post, there was about 70 views of this. Now up to 339!! Wonderful! (But have a ways to go to reach Lady Gaga's video views...)

Seems all the hotties went out the door 5 years ago. A few were definitely "come into my vault" caliber. image

  • kind of interesting if you note the # of veiws these 4 videos have:
    part 1 - 406 views
    part 2 - 45 views
    part 3 - 23 views
    part 4 - 15 views

Certainly seems people got a bit tired of them as they went along, and didn't watch all four. I'm glad i watched them all, because i thought part 4 was the best of the bunch!

  • saintgurusaintguru Posts: 7,727 ✭✭✭
    I see

    part 1: 406
    part 2: 202
    part 3: 129
    part 4: 105

But I agree!! There's not a part that isn't fascinating. great stories justr emerge...one of the best is about the "rough years". Who hasn't or can't learn something from that?

When I posted this the first segment had 17 hits. image Not bad, people.

Lloyd, we need a link to that Hollywood Halloween party thread from a few years ago. Lloyd with the Afroimage

And make sure the pics are not deleted PLEASE.

edit: I especially liked K's attitude when things went south, he seems the eternal optomist and knew how to work himself out of his problems. Good for him. A learning experience. Thank you JB for the link.

    Thank you for posting.

  • Thanks for the link, watched 2 of the 4 so far and will catch the others tonight. Very interesting and fun to hear the stories, but who dresses him? I could not dream of showing up to give a speech in that t-shirt. I hope it is some high priced t-shirt by a designer I have never heard of because I am to old. image

I do have a question for the forum. I would just love to watch the episode of "To Tell the Truth" that he was on. Any idea where I might be able to get it? He does mention that he, and others have a copies so perhaps someone can put it on youtube.

    ErrorsOnCoins -

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm actually
going to do something similar, but for an hour only.

I'll be one of four speakers for the California State
    Numismatic Association's 44th Annual Educational
Symposium on Saturday, March 31st, at the
Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City (San Fernando Valley)

My talk will be on "Mint Error Coins - A 50 Year Perspective",
and I'll talk about the state of the Error coin segment of
our hobby back in the early 60's, when I started, and
of course my first find of an off-center cent on the ground,
in a deep depression left by a Brontasaurus.

I'll also probably share some stories and talk about some
old names from the LA area back at that time.......

I have an hour to talk, and I'm looking forward to the
    Q & A session afterward - that's always fun for me.....
