Most Beautiful Stone Mtn Commem

I am betting that some of you might have a Stone Mountain Commemorative that is prettier than this one. However I have to say I have never seen finer. It's definitely an underrated design in the classic silver commemorative realtm -- and if you want one you can buy a lower graded MS coin much cheaper. The sellers price on this one is about 3x the PCGS price guide probably a premium placed for the nice color and toning.
This coin definitely sings ... parts of the coin almost looks like mother of pearl ... and I love that bit of green and russet.

But way out of my price range.

The trick with this issue is to find one with toning that really helps enhance the relief of the coin. Coins with that kind of toning are out there and you don't usually have to pay so much to get them.

I do agree with the OP though - it is a very nice coin.

The Stone Mountain is one of my favorite commems. I've seen 67's trade into five figures in both services. They can come GORGEOUS. That is a beautiful example.

While most of my commems are more toned then this example below I was mesmerized by the placement of the thin rainbow arcs in the "horizons" on both sides. I bought this few years ago from Larry Shepherd and I'm glad I did. PCSG 67. MJ

This is one I owned several years ago, I cracked it from a third-tier holder and sold it raw as AT. At the time several people felt it could have been naturally toned, and I believe the person who ended up buying it felt it was NT also. I have no idea if it ever found its way into a reputable holder. I do know it was a wonder to behold in the hand, and my photos do not do it any justice.

I don't think the Stone Mountain is really an underrated design. It's certainly one of my favorites. The coin you have posted has moved it even higher in my favorites list.

Lots of pretty stone mountains out there... and not all of them cost a fortune either.

I got this one for less than 1/10 the price of the coin shown by the OP...

I think this is the toughest coin I've ever tried to photograph.
Tons of color but nearly impossible to capture with a decent pic.
Here's the best I can do.

    MJ,

That is a magnificent coin. I absolutely love the placement of the subtle rainbow toning.

Whenever I think of a Stone Mountain, I immediately think of the NGC MS67* from the San Francisco Collection in last years FUN sale. It wasn't a big collection (only 11 coins), but it was impressive and memorable.

The San Francisco Collection of Commemoratives

The Stone Mountain is at the bottom of the list and they certainly saved the best for last. The Numismedia Wholesale value is $1K and the coin sold for almost $14K. And I thought I was going to have a shot with a $4K bid. Anyway, the image of that coin is permanently engrained in my mind. There are only a few other coins that I can recall making such an impression. Sunnywood's 1881-S MS68 Morgan Dollar comes to mind and there was a magenta & emerald toned 1882 IHC NGC MS66* handled by Anaconda that was out of this world. I have a list of others but I think I have made my point. Some collector's make light of pedigrees and think they are silly. Personally, I think that owning a coin from a collection like the San Francisco collection is a testament to the quality of the coin and should not be ignored. Not to worry MJ, when you sell your commems, you will join that list of pedigreed collections that I would like to have a representative. Speaking of impressions, I still remember the Maine that you posted a while back.

I bet you it is GENUINE slabbed only not due to Code92 (AT) but instead, Code97 (Inv. Damage).

Actually I think they called it cleaning if I remember, which I don't believe to be correct. I don't think it was a rubber band, either. When you look at it under magnification, it appears that something laid against it and not only caused the dark ring, but also corroded the rim in those two areas it passed over.

It's almost like something metal was on it and perhaps minor electrolysis took place, perhaps long before the toning occurred.

Who cares, the reverse is very enjoyable for me.
