Bust Dime NEWPS

Just picked up a few more bust dimes. I just keep running into coins I like, my "keeper" set is up to 4 now (maybe 5, I'm not sure about one of them.)

Anyway I wanted to get some opinions on photography and presentation. These have shadows offsetting the coins from the background. Like or no? Which do you prefer? I'm thinking about doing this with all my pics.

Anyway, just wanted to post these before I send them off to PCGS tomorrow. Thanks for looking!

My same question...where did you find such a nice 1828 Large Date?

I know the 1827 is blown-up in size, but that obv puncture has me quite worried.
I had an 1834 come back in a GENNIE because of something similar!

Overall though, keep it up image

Edited to add: I've got an extra 1836 which would fit smashingly into that set (grade and color)

I agree, nice looking coins....how do you think PCGS will feel about the scratches on the reverse of the 28 ?

  • Where did you find that 28 Large date? That's a good coin. They had a nice one on Ebay for a while, almost 1K for a VF30.

Edited for this, Stop buying all the dimes before I get a chance to buy some!

They won't give them a second thought, I promise. They won't even see them without a 10x glass. I didn't even know they were there until I put the pictures in photoshop.

On the 1827 the dig is very small, VERY small, and I'm 90% sure it won't be a problem, unless someone thinks it was intentional...like they were trying to make a necklace or something. I honestly think they're both no-brainers...but we'll see.

Tell you what Stone...you tell me where you got your 1829 curl base 2, and I'll tell you where I got my large 1828 image

The obverse 'dent' in the cap may come back as damaged gennie... nice dimes though... Cheers, RickO

    Maybe...we'll see.

How many of you guys are looking for an 1828 large date? Just curious. I would love to see some other examples.

I'm looking for an 1828 large date. Bought one on ebay a month ago and had to return it because the seller failed to mention the reverse was tooled.

I'm happy to have one, but the look isn't exactly what I'm going for in my set, so I'd like to switch it out/upgrade when possible...soon maybe if I can sell some coinage. It's a tougher date, but not impossible to find, although overall supplies are limited. So the 1828 Lg Date you picked up will be a nice addition for a while.

And I picked up my 1829 Curl 2 on a secret auction website image

Both are nice but I really love the 1828 Large Date.image

Nice 1828 Lg Date Derek image

It's very similar to mine (in condition). image

Always a step ahead of me on it. I'm betting that 1828 ends up in a VF20 holder. The light scratches won't hurt. Did you see the PCGS graded VG10 1821 that just went off Ebay looked like it was gouged with a nail. I would have Gen it for sure and it still holdered. I'm guessing being raw and in the random coin shop you got it in it was a good deal. The 27 looks very intentional and I would not waste the fees on it. Sell it!

  • Both are nice looking coins. I am envious. But speaking from the aspect of a newbie, both dates appear to be the same. My question is, is there a noticable difference between the large date and regular date stamping. I have to assume that there is.

Just trying to learn and not be critical.

Both coins shown are 1828 Lg Dates. The 1828 Small date's date punch is the same size as the 1829-1837 dates (no image is shown here...so far) image

I was just looking at this thread again and noticed a die break on Dereks 1828 over the "D" on the reverse. Does this break ever develop into a cud? It looks like the break has a shift in it, making it look doubled.

I know of just 1 example, and it is a low grade example, coincidentally it was also on eBay in the last 2 months (which I missed), which has a retained Cud.
I'm sure there are a couple others, but that is the only one I have seen!

    My thoughts too.

Wrong date, unless it's the same reverse...is it?

Anyway, it would be interesting to see the coin you are talking about Stone.
