How is the Market for 1983- 1997 Prestige Proof Sets?

I recall these sets were hot for a period of time. Now I don't have the faintest as nothing is really written about them.
Then again, therein may lie the answer.

Anyone here collect these Government sets? Is there any (pent-u) whatsoever?

  • I have the whole set that I actually purchased from the mint everyone but the 1983 which I bought from ebay.
Over the last few years they have come down in price from about $1200.00+ to about $850.00-$900.00 although some people on ebay still try to get more for them.

They really are beautiful deep cameo coins and the packing is really impressive. The 1996 set is the key to the series with about 55,000 minted.

Similar sets, the "American Legacy" series, were produced by the Mint from 2005 to 2008, but never caught on. Only 21,000 sets were sold in the final year of 2008.

Most greysheet for the same price as the Silver proof sets. But they are in a nicer case.

I picked up a large grouping of these- all in the original government cases and packaging. They had been offered to a dealer at 40% back and he offered them to me at 20% back.
It just seemed too good a deal to pass on. Coins were stored correctly and look superb!

The downside is they take up a lot of room.

A dead series in more ways than one.

I also remember when they were a hot item but haven't heard anyone mention them in years.

Great buy Pat. You get a host of modern proof commems plus. Forty percent back of grey sheet ? Sounds like there isn't a better time in history to get into collecting. I wish my friends would read the boards. (not that you guys are my true friends).

Is there a premium for this set since only 21,000 sets were issued? How would one differentiate these coins from this set, to individuals proof examples from the mint?

Here's a current auction (not mine), I think the 2008 Legacy Set typically fetches around $120. This is a slight premium over the 2008 standard proof set and 2008 proof bald eagle silver dollar combined.

I have most of these.. including the Philadelphia set... do not see much activity in this area. I keep them because I keep coins... although, some of the packaging on a few of the sets seems to be producing tarnish (blecchhh)... Cheers, RickO
  • Very quiet right now. We unloaded over 100 sets for well below bid at a recent Annandale VA show.

I have a complete set of them and in fact the are listed on my Sale thread.

I only have one or two of them that are getting a haze/fog on the them but the rest are fine.

I bought them all back in 2000-2002 and all of my following statements are based on that time period and what they were worth then compaired to their current values.

The majority of the sets have slowly dropped by about 10%-15% over the last 9 or 10 years.
The 2 most expensive sets then were the 1996 and 1997 both of which were running about the same at $170-$180 back then.
The 1997 set has lost almost 50% of it's value while the 1996 set has gained almost 40%

All in all, they are very nice sets that came in very nice presentation cases.

In my opinion, the more recent Legacty sets (which I also own) are no comparison. The coins are nice, but the packaging is cheap and the display presentation was in a different catagory all together, yet, like everything else these days, they cost more.

    Cheers !
