Are pre-1933 gold coins melted for bullion like silver coins are?

I'm curious to know if the populations of any gold dreck are being melted like the gazillions of cull Morgan/Peace dollars, silver halves, etc. are being melted (by the bag...or at least were not too long ago).

  • Yes. They are all melted for bullion exactly like all silver coins.
  • I am curious about this myself and would like more input.

The answer is yes for foreign and no for US. But neither ...usually.

A U. S. gold coin would have to be extremely damaged before it would make sense to melt it since these coins are used by jewelers in bezels for bracelets, necklaces, etc. and the smaller gold coins are used in men's rings.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I melt VF or worse common stuff.....I can't sell it to my customers.......Not much difference between VF and AU in price. Why buy the VF ?
