I'm surprised he did not hang on to hit 7 more HRs. He had to know that he needed 500 to get in.
He still might get in depending on how the roid players are treated.
BTW I think Bonds will get in first ballot.
EDIT: Before someone misreads my comments, I don't think McGriff used PEDs. I think his chances to get in are much better if the known roid power hitters are NOT voted in. The only one of the roid hitter who should get in is Bonds. He was already a HOF'er before Roids and he was by far the best of all the roid hitters. That has to count for something.
The strike didn't kill his chances. It probably just delayed his induction. I still think he'll make it maybe 3-5 years down the road. He definitely deserves it. Disappointing that he hasn't had more support from the voters to this point.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I think he had a hard time getting on with a team, he was very out of gas at the end of his career. Hard to believe a team wouldn't pick him up just for the increased revenue they would have received from gate receipts though. Oh well. To answer the OP, yes without question she would be in the Hall with 500 HRs. It's silly how just 7 HRs can change peoples perspectives, but that's the world we live in. Also, he loses points by spending his career in San Diego, Toronto & Tampa Bay. Again, silly but true.

You can't piss on the voters, baseball writers, your whole career and expect them to do you any favors. I wouldn't expect any less them him going in the last year of eligibility.
Don Sutton, Early Wynn, and Phil Niekro got it with 300 wins. Tommy John and Jim Kaat fell just short and haven't been voted it. It's unfortunate but it seems like the line is drawn at 500 HR's unless there are other reasons. I don't see any other facet of McGriff (great glove, MVP's, WS) that would make up for it. I don't think anyone had any interest in signing him, he was pretty much done.

McGriff has a .284 average and was already washed up when the steroid era hit. The guy deserves more than 23% of the vote, he is better than bunch of Hall of Famers stastically. McGriff was consistently a good and never hit even 40 home runs. His most was 37 homers. McGriff would get my vote if I had one. Only 25 guys with more homers. The baseball strike hurt McGriff more than any player with exception of Matt Williams, who might have hit 62 before McGwire, Sosa, and Bonds. The Expos also might have won the World Series as well. But McGriff getting 500 would have be certain. The 500, 30000, and 300 milestones matter.
I just think that 3000 K's for a pitcher should count just as much as 3000 hits for a batter. I mean, every batter with 3000 hits since 1962 that's eligible and 'roid free got in on the first ballot. But it takes Blyleven 13 tries to get into the HOF even though he had 3000 K's with 701 to spare, not to mention sixty shutouts!!
And I agree that McGruff is not getting his just due. 493, 500, what's the difference???
Heck, until Dave Kingman, every single player with 400 homeruns was in the hall of fame. After him, Darrell Evans and Jose Canseco, the 400 HR milestone lost all it's luster. Now, after all the PED fuss, even 500 HR's don't mean squat!
McGriff should definitely be in though!
I think it's also one of the reasons Dale Murphy doesn't get the support he deserves, since he came up 2 HRs short of 400.

It hurt Harold Baines the most. Add in the missed games for 1981, 1994 and 1995 and he has 3000 hits and 400 homers......
Can you imagine Harold Baines a hall of famer?????? Nice player, nice guy, but hall of famer???

It's kinda like how a lot of people were saying "if the Cardinals win the Super Bowl, Kurt Warner is a HOF'er". So......if Santonio Holmes had dropped that last pass, that somehow makes Kurt Warner a HOF'er? Something that happened when Kurt wasn't even on the field? Yeah, never understood that*.

* - But that's because I thought he was a HOF'er, win or lose. That's a discussion for another thread though
It isn't merely the 7 home runs that will keep McGriff out of the hall for quite a while at least. He was a very dominant player, but compared with others, even those who didn't use steroids, there were better while he played.
Growing up in Canada my two favorite players were Andres Galarraga and Fred McGriff. I think McGriff should be considered, and if Barry Larkin is in the Hall then there is no reason the Crime Dog can't squeeze in there too.
As for getting to 500 homers, I think the Devil Rays really wanted to help him out in 2004 but he hit .181 and I can't imagine anyone could defend leaving him in the lineup.

He was the first guy to ever lead each league in homers and was consistently excellent in October.

I think he will be a hold over, and be inducted in his second year on the ballot. He did not knowingly do anything.

Tough call as Freddie was a very good player howver he may just fall a bit short of greatness. If he makes it t will be a Jim Rice scenario.
