Which card was your favorite from the 1980's

Was it 1985 Topps Dwight Gooden or Eric Davis's rookies. Those things were hot.

Or maybe some of you dreamed of owening the 84 Mattingly or the highly sought out for 86 Canseco Rated Donruss Rookies.

We cant forget about Mark Mcgwires 1985 Topps. Never have I seen a card skyrocket from $30 to about $250 in under 6 months.

Does the Griffey 89 Upperdeck represents the 80s better than any other card.

Which card was your favorite from the 80's.
Pick whatever card represents the 1980's for you.
Theres no wrong or right here. Just great cards to discuss.

Ill throw mine in here in a bit.

  • My favoritie from the '80s were Garbage Pail Kids. I remember going to the Liquor Store everyday to buy packs and make sets. Wish I still had some unopened boxes or sets of the 1st series.

    Boo!

    1) 1983 Topps George Brett (my favorite player)
    2) 1984 Topps Ron Kittle (first time I remember a huge buzz about a modern rookie card from the current year)
    3) 1989 Upper Deck Nolan Ryan (both the three headed action pic and the football pic)

My favorite was the 1985 Donruss Dwight Gooden. That black border on that gorgeous set with the hottest player in pro sports at the time.... I was thrilled to pull those out of packs.

Also, I believe Ron Kittle was in the 1983 Fleer set, so that should have been his rookie.

  • I really dig the 1985 Topps Mattingly. Its a card Ive always wanted and theres nothing even special about it. Did pick up 3 recently.

My favorite of all-time (which comes from the 80's) is the 1986 Canseco Donruss. That was the first card I remember seeing in the becketts that was one of the newer cards in recent years that was worth big bucks and I never imagined that I would ever own it. Just figured it would never go down. Now I pick them up for $3.

I know, kinda sad. I started buying packs of topps in 1986 but I didnt know anyones names, I just loved baseball cards after getting over my massive garbage pail kids faze. By 1988 I started really getting into buying packs and trading in school with other friends and by 90, premium packs like Upperdeck and Leaf were out and most of my friends were buying those and I was still stuck on buying junk like Topps, Fleer and Score. Mattingly - 84 Donruss was a big card back in the day. 85 Topps wasnt anything amazing by a long stretch but in the late 80's people held onto the Mattinglys. Besides, I really never knew people who had cards from 1985 and before, at least not when I first started collecting.

TOTALLY digging that Megatron BTW!! I want one

Might have been '83. I just remember being the big annual summer show in KC and everyone was talking about that card and the fact that crazy collectors had driven the price over the $5 mark. I could not believe anyone would pay $5 for a single card from the current year's set.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

By far my favorite era in cards. Too many to chose from but if I had to pick one it would be this.
(84 Donruss was a close second but something about this card I absolutely love)

I remember in 84 buying many, many Topps packs trying to get as many Daryl Strawberry cards as possible. He was advertised as the next Mickey Mantle,(possibly by Sports Ill.?) I didn't even know who Don Mattingly was until later that year or 85, he wasn't hyped like Strawberry. Had to go back through all my commons and pull the Mattinglys' later.
  • 1982 topps card #1 Steve Carlton highlight. It was the first set I ever collected.

Shocked no one has mentioned Michael Jordan's RC yet.

Mine would be the 1983 Topps Football Tony Dorsett Record Breaker #2.

I remember watching that MNF game against the Vikes with my Pops and when T.D. took it from endzone to endzone I became a football fan for life.
