The two most coveted cards in the set....I just obtained both of them this week.

And the back of the Yaz card....the Venie version has no Topps copyright on the back near the border next to the cartoon. The US Topps version has the Topps copyright.

Don---quite an accomplishment. Is the Topps logo missing on all these cards or just the Yaz ?

My complements to you, these sets are fairly tough. I have a number of Venezuelan cards (all submitted by me) and finding the right condition can be sensitive and require a lot of patience.

You must be proud!! Are the Latin players harder to collect? Is there another player yopu are on the lookout for? Congratulations Mariner!

Most of them are raw cards I have found over the years that I submitted myself although I did buy the Mantle and Yaz and a few others recently which were very recently graded....including this Banks. I only need 3 commons now and it is done...I have raws that I need to submit to get to the complete set minus 3 cards.

    Thanks Everyone!

Don---the Kaline is a variation card image see the little red printers mark in the upper left. Some cards have it in varying degrees and some don't. I think Bob L mentioned it in an SCD article. Now you need the other one

Great set Don! How do you identify Venezuela versions? I guess it's the paper stock since it seems there are no changes to the print.
  • Options
    marinermariner Posts: 2,580 ✭✭✭✭
John....the first series is easy to identify....all the backs are gray.

In the second series, it is a little harder. Many of the cards do not have the Topps copyright on them or only a portion of it. Otherwise, the cards are on poorer paper stock, no gloss and dull look to them.

My sub finally popped from PSA with my latest 1960 Venezuela Topps. My set is now complete minus three cards. I am very happy to be so close to completion on this very difficult and unique set. There are very few collectors out there that collect these cards, but I have found this to be really fun to put together.

    1960 Venezuela Topps Set

The cards that I still need are Mike Fornieles, Lou Burdette and Marty Keough. If you know of anyone that may have these cards, please PM me.

I also have quite a few duplicates so if anyone is interested in adding some of these rare and unique cards to their collection, also please PM me.

    Happy Easter!!

I wish I understood this Venezulain thing? Why are they so tough and how does one distinguish the difference?
  • Options
    marinermariner Posts: 2,580 ✭✭✭✭
They are so tough because the cards were only issued in Venezuela and they are always found in low to mid grade condition. A truly high grade Venie in 1959 and 1960 is PSA 5 with PSA 4 being the normal high grade. The paper stock was poor, there is little or no gloss and the look is dull. Most were abused or destroyed by kids back in the day and not too many have found their way into collections.

In 1960, the first series cards are easy to tell that they are Venies because they have gray backs whereas the US version, of course, has the white backs. The second series is more difficult. The cards have a lackluster look with no gloss, poorer paper stock and many of the second series cards are missing the Topps copyright line on the back. Those are easy to distinguish....for those that have the copyright line, they are set apart by what I said earlier about the card stock and lack of gloss, etc.
