1938 D/D buff question

ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,167 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was looking to add one to the collection. One I thought I liked had a chuck missing from the bottom part of the large feather. The more examples I looked at, the more I found. At the risk of answering my own question, is this a common characteristic for this variety? Are ones with a full large feather the exception? Just a couple of examples...

Interesting. The D/D I have in hand has the same obverse die characteristic. The other, purchased all of 10 minutes ago on the web, (PCGS MS66), also has the same characteristic. Today's purchase, is, of course, unattributed.

Don't know if the coin above is still available, but it's my favorite of the three.

This is sometimes seen on the 1916. I believe it's a manifestation of abrading the die to remove clashes etc.
