Why Home Depot employees drink

Two guys came in the store today looking for gallons of "acid" and a metal pan.

Seems that "a feller on the internet" said that a catalytic converter holds 1.7 ounces of platinum and they "learnt" how to extract it.

After I told them that they were going to kill themselves they decided they could try a bleach and ammonia mix.image

I usually like to make a sale, luckily they left with nothing.

Only in Tennessee.

In the last year, in my apartment complex, two people lost there catalytic converters
to thiefs in the carports, cops said it was a growing concern and even fingerprinted
    the vehicles involved.

mixing bleach with sulfate of amonia will work best

i used to do that in retail out on the receiving dock, just for kicks

don't know if cat converters had been installed yet.

Now you got me all worried about paying $2500+ to replace my cars catalytic converter. I'm pretty sure that even for larger SUV's a new catalytic converter isnt worth more then $1,000.
  • Catalytic converters are a hot item in salvage yards as one can imagine. There seems to be a few small groups of individuals that make a regular circuit of yards east of the Mississippi and scoop up all they can find. They are pretty high tech. They have info on the PM content of each make and model's converter and have an algorithm where they use the mileage to estimate what remains of the Pd after xnumber of miles.

OK, I have often wondered? How much platinum is in a catalytic converter?

How much platinum is in a catalytic convertor?

    one poster online writes,

I am a buyer of scrap catalytic converters. The process you ask about is very hard and dangerous. It is a process that is regulated under EPA standards. It is profitable to sell the converter as a whole unit. You can refine or have them refined in other countries if you want to gather up 3000 of them and wait 90 days on your money to come back to you. My web site buys on average 2500 catalytic converters a month. I have tried it all and to refine a converter yourself is totally crazy. There is 3 acids in the process and it becomes very explosive and at times it does explode. The proper automated machines keep the workers safe when this happens. There are several platinum groups in most converters. A large gm I pay 100.00 for it on my web site. A aftermarket converter is not worth what a factory converter is. It will only net you 10.00 as scrap. Some large converters I pay 140.00 for them and some exotic converters go higher than that, 200.00 or so. Before you find all there is to refining your own think about the people around you and the laws of the land.

seems like the answer is, "it depends" (as in, it depends on which converter) but sounds like a some fraction of an ounce of noble metals on average and difficult to separate
