<< <i>I actually agree with you 100%. I think anyone put into the Hall should have been a pretty well rounded player. I think that's why guys like Dave Kingman don't make it. While I agree his defense was awesome (I'm a Detroit fan so I saw him make many, many plays against my hapless 90's Tigers)...I just don't see the HOF for a guy that hit .300 once in 23 years. Especially in an era where offensive numbers were off the charts.

That's what is fun about these types of topics. People watched the same player for his entire career...and have very differing opinions. My opinion is that he was a very steady, solid player. But not HOF worthy. He reminds me of watching Placido Polanco as a Tiger. Maybe not the flash on D...but a guy that never made an error..timely hits, aggressive baserunning, never struck out, etc. >>

I will be driving through Detroit next week heading up to the casino in Windsor. Love the view of downtown from across the river with the GM building...nice to see that city make a comeback.

Larkin is all around great shortstop. He played for only 1 team in his 19 years in his hometown of Cincinnati. He won a World Series and has good character. Those things help.

Omar Vizquel should be a Hall of Famer if defense matters. In the last 60 years of baseball only Ozzie Smith could rival Vizquel's defense. 11 Gold Gloves, 2841 Hits, But ONLY 3 Star Games. Could be a long wait for Vizquel. Shortstop and Catcher and Second Base are the positions where Defense is highly valued. If that is the case Vizquel gets in.

That's cool Johnny D. I love the view from across the river. Makes Downtown Detroit looking bigger than it really is.

I actually work at the Ren Cen and face Casino Windsor. Good luck this weekend!

Thanks but as usual I will probably lose just enough that they will continue to send me free room offers.

<< <i>To me, Larkin belongs in the Hall of Very Good. >>

Totally agree, I don't know how the writers can vote in a guy like Larkin and leave out a guy like Dale Murphy, who has superior stats all around and was a 2-time MVP. Personally, I don't believe either of them are HOF worthy, but if Larkin gets in, then so should the Murph.

Agreed. The Murph and a few other players deserve it more than Larkin.

I love the "He's in the Hall of Good" argument. I didn't even know the HOF was called the Hall of Great. It's called the Hall of FAME for a reason. It's NOT all about flashy stats. It has a LOT to do with the position played and how popular the player is. Larkin is one of the best and most popular shortstops to ever play the game. Players like Dale Murphy are one in hundreds of outfielders with similar stats where as Larkin is one of the top-10 to 15 SS's of all-time.
