DC Duke Ellington Quarter Double Die

So what happened to these. I think I remember only one coming up on ebay two years ago and it sold for around $1K if I remember. Seems like it is scarce. I see a partial on ebay for $125.

It didn't 'go' for that price.

It was 'priced' at that price.

Has anyone here found one of these? The hoopla seems to have died down. Does anyone know how many were certified or how much one actually sold for? I bought 50 rolls of the Ellington quarters and have not opened any of they yet. I have never seen the double die error in person. This seems to be quite a rare variety. $1500 may be a bargain.

Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
  • I think $1500 for an AU remains a pretty fair price in today's market.

There was a PCGS MS64 that was tried several times on eBay at the $7-10k range with no interest. I personally think that's closer to a $2500 coin.

    I have a PCGS 66 that I'd guess is a $3-4k coin through a major auction house.

I've stated this before... I think these will very slowly come out of the woodwork like the 69-S DDO Lincoln. With such a huge spread on the doubling I think they will become quite valuable, but only time will tell. Unfortunately the doubling is confined to a relatively small area.

These and similar varieties are only for a selective few collectors that have the resources and that want nice, readily distinguishable modern varieties for their collections.
The first few usually go for thousands depending upon grade. If multiples are available, the topgrades command big premiums while the undergrads only attract a few hundred dollars.

IF this particular variety were to be found in large numbers, the prices would certainly reflect that since once those that are interested in them have what they want, they simply stop looking (and buying).

That is a nice strong doubled die, and I am surprised there is not more interest in it.

I wonder if it is hurt by:

A: The general lack of interest in the one-year D.C. and the territories series, or

B: The plethora of minor doubled dies in the 2009 Lincoln cents.

    What does partial mean?
With doubled dies it either is the same die or it's something else like another doubled die or strike doubling or nothing.

Do you have a link to it?

I think it is a cool variety but I am not focused on Modern Quarters these days. If I were to find one, I would be pretty darn happy. image

    Yes, mine.

When I read on these boards, back in 2009, that they had been found in my area I went on a treasure hunt and found it.

Well then, thanks for spamming the boards, and this thread, with the link to your auction on ebay.

Despite the owner's displaying a link to the coin and making a PCGS graded coin "known" to the collecting world, and before we jump on the spam bandwagon, circling as though we are on the attack, it would probably behoove those interested in the numismatic side of this "link", to express an opinion or views of what FMV is, rather than highlight the owner or some "violation or code" that doesn't seem to be fairly or even professionally adhered to by the biggest of the biggest dealers in the country here.
I would bid handsomely for such a coin, but not close to the "$" level of where the bid opens. However, at the $1200 level, I would be the first bidder. God knows how many rolls are sitting there in "hiding".

It's a very cool coin, but I think it's just sort of forgotten about...

As a series, the 50 State Quarters plus America the Beautiful Quarters is too exhausting for me to even contemplate collecting. There's no series like the quarters to show how the Mint can saturate a market to the point it drowns demand.

As an error collector I wouldn't mind having one, but the price on the one linked to on ebay is prohibitive considering other errors with a broader collector market you could purchase for similar money. Since no great quantity of them turned up, there's pretty much no marketing of them - and without more awareness there just isn't demand, so for now it's just sort of relegated to the "oh, that's pretty neat" category.

Fine and dandy....that's why there is a BST forum.
The poster could have easily just said something akin to "have one for sale, but don't want to spam here, so created a BST thread if anyone is interested".
