How rare are draped bust dimes?

I'm talking the large eagle type. It seems that half dollars and dollars are fairly common followed by quarters and then dimes and then half dimes. I am not a specialist in any of these by no means but I looked for quite a while for a mid grade no problem draped bust dime. I eventually found one but kept my eye out for them and it seems that nice no problem fine to very fine dimes are really scarce. Is this just a fluck or are they hard to find.

Nice problem free draped bust dimes are rare and hard to find in any grade. They always bring good money when available. These are the kind of coins that the gray sheet is almost no help on. If you see one that you like at the right price - buy it immediately because it will not be in the dealer's stock for long. They are always in demand. Bob

I was walking by a dealer table just as I walked into the FUN show on Thursday and one caught my eye. Normally I would not have stopped, he only had one case and all were Morgans. I asked to look at it and knew I had to have it. It was a big chunk of my coin budget, but I knew it would be hard to find if I passed.

We did a cash trade deal and it was like being kissed the very first time. I was on cloud nine and my show could of ended at that point and i would have been happy.

PCGS 1805 AU50 4 berries, pictures from Todd soon.

I tried to find more or a half dime to match but no luck.

I am glad I pulled the trigger, normally I would wait to see everything once then go back to the items I liked for pickups. Not this one, my show was 2 minutes old when I bought it.

    Grab them when you can.

That coin sounds awesome Frozenink, look forward to the pictures. Cheers, RickO
  • I would like to see the AU 50 also. that would be a lot of coin in my opinion. I have looked on about every website that I usually visit and not one nice draped bust dime in the fine to EF range without problems.(type bust that is).

Rich Urich or Dick Osburn come to mind as folks who usually have some in stock, but nice ones are really hard to find and (needless to say) quite pricey.

A very nice raw, steely blue 1800 walked into my local shop a couple of years ago. Looked to be AU. It ended up grading PCGS AU55 and was basically not for sale
at that point. Greal looking totally orig coin. They aren't really rare but to find a real nice one you pretty much have to look at the national level.

One factor in the low survival rate of early dimes, especially coins that can make it into graded holders, is the thickness of the coin. Early dimes are thin, and early half dimes are really thin. I always say that if someone sneezed on an early half dime, it would bend. Therefore, you can find early dollars, halves, and quarters that can be graded, but dimes are more difficult, and half dimes are even more difficult.
