I think you may have already missed that boat. Chinese coins have gone into orbit the past few years. Kicking myself. I'm posting this from where else. China. MJ

Once some very important issues like counterfeit detection pan out Chinese numismatics have a good long term upside. Numerous collectible series combined with a rapidly growing collector base translates into excellent potential.
Chinese coins saw a meteoric increase in demand and value in a very short timeframe over the last two years but dealers are now reporting a decrease in salability and demand compared to trends in 2011. Buyers need to maintain discipline when making aquisitions and not get caught up in demand bubbles or fads of the moment.

I overheard two different Chinese coin dealers at the FUN show repeat the same thing. They said prices had finally stopped exploding and were starting to stabilize. The prices on some of the Chinese coins were absolutely flabbergasting. I don't know much about them, but I saw fractional Chinese gold from the 80s selling for several thousand dollars at more than one booth. IMO anyone venturing into this area of the market now better know what they're doing or they may wind up buried... I'm certainly interested in them though as even if prices come in a bit there's going to be a market for them in the future.

Thought has MORE than crossed my mind. If I weren't so damn old I think I would. Probably not China, but Vietnam has some charms. The old Chinese lady we bought this house from went "back" and is like a hog in Heaven.
Nobody trusts them, but they sure have fed us our lunch (paid for by us) over the past few decades and I'd bet EVERYTHING I own that they will last longer than we do as a world power.
But.... looking at the old Yuan Shi-Kai and Junk dollars that were all over the place from just a while back for almost NOTHING is a real eye opener.
It's OBVIOUS who has discretionary income and it sure ain't the US.
Thiink I'm going to send it to Heritage for their April Chicago auction. You think it will still bring strong money? A Pr66 went for $4,600 (with BP) last April. I'd be happy with $4k for this 68. Any comments appreciated.
The US Mint could learn a thing or two from the People's Bank of China. I saw a four coin Chinese bar series once in which all four bars had their own design, but a new, single paoramic image was displayed when all four bars were placed next to each other in the correct order.
I was thinking of dumping my American girlfriend for a Chinese girl I just met. Maybe you are on to something. MJ

The market for Russian and Polish coins was incredibly hot in 2007-2008 when oil prices were going through the roof and Russians were flush with cash. Things have come down quite a bit since then, especially in the areas that I keep tabs on. China has seen huge asset bubbles in property and other areas that also spilled into coins, art, and other areas more recently. But those prices will probably also decline in the next 2-3 years.

In my experience the Russian coin market is still high and on some pieces, incredibly stupid pricing. I collect these and haven't seen an auction yet that had reasonable prices......or even extra high prices.
I think one day I'd like to get a slabbed older chinese dollar like those fat man ones or something just to have something to show family but thats pretty much it.

Yesterday a man came in with a 1906 S $20 Lib and a 1908 $20 Saint. He said he wasn't sure if he wanted to "dump them". Then he said they had sentimental value. I said : " they have a lot more than sentimental value, sir".
Getting in to Chinese coins would have been a wise move 3-5 years ago. I'm not sure if they can continue their incredible price increases for the next 3-5 years though. I'm not predicting a slowdown, just don't know.

Don't kid yourself. Wars between major countries like China, Russia, US, England, etc... will never again be fought with conventional weapons. Economic warfare is much more effective.

Generally speaking the prices of the modern coins of China have slowed or declined recently. This is most apparent in grades below MS69/PR69. One of the problems with collecting modern China, is determining not only the number of coins made but also the survival rate. The number of different coins produced by the China mint recently is staggering. The cost often greatly exceeds the melt value. The quality is extremely high with typically excellent designs, however. Pandas, dragons and unicorns remain most popular.
The older coins especially those of the China provinces have not slowed based on prices realized in auctions in China. While once readily found on eBay, now only the most common coins of the provinces appear there.
Counterfeit coins are indeed a problem and the popularity and price of older coins graded by PCGS and NGC has increased in China. Another factor is the collector in China has become more grade aware.

What could possibly go wrong for buying slabbed Chinese coins? heh.
