Well, I was able to attend on Friday. The Waldorf Astoria was undergoing some exterior cosmetic work. There is something about the NYC Architecture that always makes the trip fun.
I was able to get to the show a few minutes before the opening- first the show organizers did a good job considering the ongoing work. The ladies at the entrance were friendly and not to mention quite attractive.
As for coins- excellent as usual, but one has to have the right attitude- the bourse was crowded and one has to be patient.
As for the coins I saw- I looked at a beautiful 5 Franc pattern in a matte proof that was graded by NGC. I looked at a 1723 GB Georg I Crown- raw and it looked very good but it is another example of haymarking and flecking that will effect it in terms of being desirable.
I saw some decent German, French and Mexican coins. I think my lost opportunity was not looking closer at Medals- for those of you that enjoy medals, I tend to think this show is alittle underrated in terms of what can been seen and purchased. I did buy a Jubilee medal for Oscar II - King of Sweden and this would be during the period Sweden ruled Norway. I thought both sides were well designed. It dates from 1897 and while it is silver, it is likely not 925 as it is not marked. The weight is 98 grams and it is one of those purchases that was spur of the moment- not sure it is that though, but I like it.
The other medal I bought was Czechoslovakian and dated 1939. It is quite graphic and was allegedly done for the NY World's Fair in 1939 after the country was overtaken by the Third Reich. I thought it was interesting and I don't recall seeing this- I doubt it is rare- just something I just don't recall seeing.
I found two GB Coins that I thought were exceptional- both are common dates - 1902 and 1893- but they are very nice. I also managed to buy afew German Empire One Mark coins- I like the series but I need to learn more about the surviving population of this series- I suspect others are in the same boat.
I was able to catch up with 1960NYGiants, JMHouston, Zohar, MrEureka and TwoKopeki. We exchanged stories, looked at coins and had a great time. I should folks a 1960 GB Crown- I just thought there was something special about this one and the concensus was it could be a VIP. I should have had Mark Rasmusson look at it and I just did not get around to it. He did have some very nice GB material. I enjoyed meeting up with everyone- I think this is a fun show-
edited for spelling and no doubt there is still an error
