I just watched it recently. I enjoyed it but there are defintely better Baseball movies in my opinion. Great role for Jonah Hill I thought. Worth checking out.
<< <i>Am I the only one that thought the "Baseball" documentary that Ken Burns did was horrible? I bought it at a flea market one Sunday for $28, watched it, then sold it at the flea market the very next Sunday for $25 and I have to say that it was the worst three dollars I've ever spent. There was a ton of filler (showing various baseball pictures with music accompaniment). Each "inning" (episode) was about 3 hours long and each one had about 45 minutes of filler throughout. I also thought that it talked about Jackie Robinson far, far, far too long (an episode and a half, so about 5 hours) and mentioned players like Roberto Clemente, Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax as mere footnotes to the game, and made no mention of players like Warren Spahn, Eddie Matthews, or Ernie Banks. >>
I think you're overstating things a bit but I do agree that it was a flawed documentary. The first couple "innings" are fabulous, with all the footage of early baseball and so on. Truly amazing stuff.
Each inning is actually more like 2 hours, not 3.
I do agree that Jackie Robinson got far too much coverage and that other relevant stories got short shrift. How do you not mention the Tigers winning in '68 after their city burned around them in the '67 pennant chase? Or Denny McLain's 31 wins?
I also would agree that there was too much filler but not an overwhelming amount like you've indicated.
