Top 3 Favorite Baseball Movies

Mine would have to be

1 - *61 - great movie for Maris/Mantle fans.

2 - Major League - This movie came out back when collecting cards was the thing to do and me along with all my friends saw it and loved it.

3 - The Sandlot - While some kids went out searching for a dead body that summer (Stand by Me), other kids simply wanted to play baseball.

What are your top 3?

  • Great selection guys. I just saw eight men out recently and I loved it. I never was really too familiar with that whole black sox scandal but it was highly enjoyable.

Never heard of Long Gone. Ill have to look at the trailer now on Youtube.

BTW - Have any of you seen that "Hustle" movie with Tom Seizemore that he's playing Pete Rose? Ive been curious about that one.
  • Major League
    The Natural
    Field of Dreams

As far as Hustle goes. I bought it a few months ago at an Odd Lots type store for 2.99 I have yet to watch it. Also got The Bronx is Burning.

Long Gone was an HBO movie I believe in the mid 80's. Want to say William Peterson was the lead (CSI guy). If you've never seen it, it is a must see--and stayed pretty close to the book. Great movie...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I'm a Bull Durham guy and have been ever since it came out. Another movie I'd suggest is "Sugar." It came out in the last couple years and was really good. My girlfriend (now wife) really liked it, too. Check it out.

This movie NEVER gets mentioned with baseball movies, but it is definitely worth a look. It is my favorite - The Stratton Story starring Jimmy Stewart, June Allyson, Frank Morgan, and Agnes Moorehead.

    My list -

    1. The Stratton Story
    2. The Natural
    3. Pride of the Yankees

  • Cobb is my favorite, only because I was in it. It was filmed in birmingham's rick wood field. I was a student at UAB and they posted flyers across campus for extras to fill the stands. No pay what so ever, but I did get e really bad haircut.

61 was great and Field of Dreams were great too

No love for "Angels in the Outfield?" Probably one of the worst. Tony Danza's throwing was PUTRID! He threw worse than a girl with a severely torn rotator cuff and actually made paltry athletic skills exhibited in "Bang the Drum Slowly" seem authentic.

    Favorites:
    1. The Natural
    2. 61*
    3. Eight Men Out

Honorable Mention (ironically all Kevin Costner):

  • I've seen a few mantle movies that are pretty awesome but don't remember the names of most of them.

Favorite "sports" movie would probably be The Longest Yard.
  • 1) Sugar - I guess most overlook it due to it being in Spanish, but this movie was very well done. Very authentic in terms of culture, and from my understanding, those in college/minors pursuing a career in baseball say its one of the most authentic. Maybe its because my wife is Dominican, and I will likely buy property and a home there in the next 5 years, but this is easily my #1 choice.

    2) Ken Burns: Baseball - I know this is more like a series, but I love the historical aspect of baseball so it is a must watch.

    3) The Natural - I'm a product of the 80s - Loved this movie as a kid, still enjoy it today.

There is an actual Topps baseball card associated with the movie The Sluggers Wife. It pictures O'Keefe as Darryl Palmer in the format of the 1984 Topps cards, front and back, and is numbered # 800. No Topps 1984 set is complete without it image. I t is listed in the Topps section of the SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards.

Besides Bull Durham, another decent Costner baseball movie is For The Love Of The Game
    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955

Agree with everything here. Three that I found surprisingly good:
    1. Mr. Baseball - Tom Selleck in Japan. Featuring Brad Lesley
    2. Little Big League - Kid manages the twins. Genuinely good and fairly reverent. At least 20 cameos and Kevin Elster and Leon Durham act. Featuring Brad Lesley
    3. Bronx is Burning - Great series

  • I'd have to go:

    1.) 61*
    2.) Cobb
3.) A League of Their Own

Am I the only one that thought the "Baseball" documentary that Ken Burns did was horrible? I bought it at a flea market one Sunday for $28, watched it, then sold it at the flea market the very next Sunday for $25 and I have to say that it was the worst three dollars I've ever spent. There was a ton of filler (showing various baseball pictures with music accompaniment). Each "inning" (episode) was about 3 hours long and each one had about 45 minutes of filler throughout. I also thought that it talked about Jackie Robinson far, far, far too long (an episode and a half, so about 5 hours) and mentioned players like Roberto Clemente, Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax as mere footnotes to the game, and made no mention of players like Warren Spahn, Eddie Matthews, or Ernie Banks.

    2. Sandlot
    3. Eight Men Out
  • Major League (1989)

    Tiger Town (1983)
