Type Set collection

Again = strictly a noob question. What does it mean type set collection? Does it mean a sampling of particular coins or one of every coin minted say for Walking Liberty? Sorry for the basic question.

    Welcome nam'

A Type set usually refers to a collection of different types, and is wonderful collecting focus for those that tend to be, well, a little unfocused image

For example a 20th Century US Type Set would include all of the designs from the 20th Century, for example it would include a Barber, Standing Liberty and Washington Quarter (or maybe more than one of the latter two as there were several changes), as well as a Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin and Kennedy Half Dollar. Obviously that is only part of the list.

The most common type set criteria here seems to be the Dansco 7070 album, although many other formats exist.

Hope this helps answer your question

    Open to interpretation at times.
Generally, one thinks of a Dansco album # 7070 when one talks type set these days.
Not the only type set album, and it can be done in many ways.

So, it is 1 of each design in each denomination. For instance, an indian head cent for 1859 (laurel wreath reverse), one from 1860-1864 (copper nickel w/ oak wreath reverse), and one from 1864-1909 (bronze/copper) would do for filling IHC type set needs. A lincoln cent w/ wheat reverse, a Lincoln memorial reverse, as well as each of the 2009 changes now and the 2010. A flying eagle would complete most type set needs for small cents. Some may do things a little different, but those are the ones that many would do. Some may just do 1 from 2009, but I would do all 4.

Half cents would usually be Draped Bust, Classic Head, and Coronet, but some purists may do earlier to get Lettered Edge as well.

Rinse and repeat for each released circulated denomination

  • I like type sets. You can really define your goals any way you want.

Start out with getting one coin, any coin. Now you have 1 coin in your type set.

As long as the next coin is a different type you are building your collection!

It is nice to set smaller goals so you can reach them. Trying to collect a complete type set with every type using strict definitions of type would be very expensive as it would include $20 gold coins, $4 gold coins, coins from the 1700s and so on.

So if you like silver you can try to collect a 20'th century silver type set. It would include barber, mercury and Roosevelt dimes. Barber, Standing Lib and Washington quarters. Barber, Walking Lib, and JFK halves.

Then you have to decide if you want to move on to copper or dig deeper into silver. There are different types of Washington quarters for example.
  • You can collect any or all the types listed in the red book starting with U.S. federal coins. Most people can't go that far though unless you have very deep pockets. Best to buy you a 7070 U.S. type set book and go from there. It does not have the very early issues (expensive coins) in it.

    I like type sets too.
Here is a link to some of PCGS recognized type sets to give you some ideas.
You can make a type set to include whatever you wish.
The basic idea is to collect different types of coins instead of the same type by date/mm etc.

Dansco 7070 is one of the more affordable -complete- typesets that you can get. I personally have one I have been working on and it is a lot of fun so far. It keeps me occupied when my primary collection is so difficult to add coins to.

  • +1 to the Dansco 7070 comments.

This set is definitely doable, and a lot of fun to boot!

You also have a lot of flexibility around what "look" or grade you want to do the set in.

But most of all, have fun doing it!
Many buy and sell transactions. Let's talk!
  • Hey RYK, Nice set

  • RYK that is a fine collection. Some points come to mind as I was looking at your posting

    - are all the pages and coins included in one album or are we looking a pages from different albums?

    - this had to have taken some time to put together something as good looking as this?

    - it appears that you set or sets covers the gamut of US coins (one of every minted coin that is not gold).

I think that anyone would be proud to have something like this in their collection.
