I am a dork.

SeattleSlammerSeattleSlammer Posts: 10,055 ✭✭✭✭✭
So I tried cleaning sticker residue off the back of a slab with some Goof Off. Ended up eating into the plastic as well as fogging it up directly over the coin. Got some PlastX and diligently wiped away. Things seemed to improve at first but then the plastic became even cloudier and more mangled looking overnight. So instead of pulling out my belt sander I mailed it to PCGS to reholder. I am a dork. Just sayin'. image

Instead of cleaning sticker residue from a slab, I just crack it open and resubmit.

I hope it wasn't one of your OGH pcgs slabs.

WD40 works great for removing sticker glue residue. Just keep it away from the slab seams as it is a penetrating oil.

    Fortunately not an OGH.

Thanks for sharing your experiences so others can learn from your mistake. At least you didn't use acetone which would have melted the plastic.

Im NOT a fan of the plastiX. Remember, that stuff is made to quickly clear up such things as those (horrible idea) plastic headlight covers. I think there are various sizes of grit in that compound, some very coarse.

slab renew, while costlier, seems to be a MUCH better made product, with fine abrasive only.

My long lost other brother Darrel is here somewhere. image

I don't feel so alone. I tried cleaning a motor with gasoline years ago. Ended up having to rewire my brothers Duster.

LOL I'm sitting here looking at my bottle of Goo Gone, wondering if it would've worked better than that Goof Off stuff! Don't use that stuff you buy from late night TV infomercials....

Don't worry, being a Dork = being a coin collector, you're in good company! And yep, I've messed up a slab or 2 myself.
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.
  • I've used kleenex with a little tooth paste with success.... it also gives your coins a minty scent :-)

Tooth paste is too messy. Brasso works great. On the Brasso can they even say it's excellent for removing scratches from acrylic watch crystals.

A fellow around here did something similar 30 or so years ago. He's been known as 'Melted Chuck' ever since. You would probably have been dubbed 'Lucky (your first name here)'.
Many, many perfect transactions with other members. Ask please.

  • As long as you get the same results from the slab factory your not
a dork. I also tried cleaning a slab and had the same results. I instead
cracked the coin out and sent it back to PCGS to get it reslabbed and
low and behold it came back a grade higher. Sometimes you can win!
But I sure won't try cleaning it the way I did that time ever again.
