NYINC report.

After a long night at the Toronto airport and a rush hour cab ride through New York, I'm finally at Waldorf. It appears that the bourse opens at 2 for the early birds, so I took the time to view some lots in the upcoming Stacks sale. A few interesting pieces, like the cast Chihuahua 8 reales with an unusual host date of 1805 and no correction to the original mint mark, nice early Durango and Zacatecas pieces (1812 and 1810), and a first struck example of a Supreme National Council 8 reales. Looked through some larger lots from Mexico, as well. Found an unattributed overdate in one of the lots and a plated counterfeit in another.

Now hanging out in the lobby, drinking an $8 latte. Starbucks here has the same pricing structure as the one in the Louvre. I don't see myself enjoying the cuisine at the Waldorf much, since I do want to be able to afford some coins on this trip.

More to come...

Waldorf food = OVERRATED in my opinion.

How is the mood at the show?
    Are people upbeat and buying?

Sure wish I could get the latest Spink catalogue.

There seems to be a lot of action. And it says a lot since today was only the early birds and not the general admission. Quite a lot of ancient and German material. Mexican coins are spread thin among the usual suspects - Mexican Coin Company, Mike Dunigan, Sedwick, etc... I don't know if I'm getting too picky, but barely anything that caught my eye. I did end up selling a few pieces and picked up a gorgeous AU58-ish raw 1782 8 reales from Mike with a colorful patina. Ill see if he'll give me store credit towards another coin tomorrow, since I noticed a spot of corrosion on it after I bought it.

Met-up with JCMHouston in the afternoon and then uncorked a couple of bottles of Pinot Noir from Niagara with some nicely aged Parmesan cheese with Andy (MrEureka). He's doing his thing at the first Baldwins session, after which we're going to hit the town for a place to eat with a couple of German dealers.

Looking forward to the breakfast tomorrow with the forumites. Hope I wake up for it, since I'm now going on about 38 hours of no sleep and a happy mix of nicotine and caffeine and the night is still young image

So, day 1 totals: sold 3 coins, bought 1 and it's getting exchanged tomorrow.

Now... Should I take my camera with us into the city? image

It's a lot of fun, LordM!

Met-up for breakfast with Jeff, Zohar, William (FilthyBroke) and his son, and CarlosJ. After coffee we hit the bourse. It is packed today. Lots of action on the floor.

Stopped by Mike's table and ended-up trading in the 1782 I bought from him yesterday plus some cash for a nice AU example of a 1763/2 Pillar with some light toning. There are a few small spots of green on the reverse, so I already submitted the coin to NCS for some targeted spot removal. I specifically stated on the submission form to retain the toning and only treat the spots. Hope it doesnt come back dipped-out.

We a had follow up meeting at mreuraka's table at 1 and got to meet a few more forum members. A pretty good show i thought and it seemed pretty packed all day. I had a decent haul today including another sixpence from Andy (1825 in 65), three 18th C. German States minors, and finally a 1773 farthing from coinkat. Pics to come after i get back home.

It was really great to meet all the forumites at the show, I really enjoyed that part of the trip the most.

I really wish I could go to this, as it's so close to home (about an hour and a half, depending on traffic) but I am deathly afraid of heights and would probably give myself a heart attack in the attempt. Do take pictures, especially if it is your first time in NYC.

Spent longer than usual at the show today, but much to my disappointment, did not find anything spectacular.
I did find three interesting medals from one my most reliable dealers and Berman had an unexpected find.
Otherwise, though, pretty mundane. One dealer had a fantastic Carlos IV medal, but I was not quite willing to pay the price.
There was another dealer with some nice stuff, but again, I did not feel comfortable with with the prices that he was asking.

I probably will go back tomorrow and maybe search for Salzburg thalers and the like, introduced to me by Zohar.

If you guys don't mind revealing sources, any recommendations?

Jeff thanks for putting the breakfast together and your generosity. It was great spending time with you, Roman (TwoKopeiki), William (FilthyBroke). Overall very little supply of interest in the Taler domain - seems that other than the few on the major auctions, there is little higher grade material. I was close to buying a 2 Taler piece yet Andy's (Mr. Eureka) advice helped me avoid a questionable purchase.

I will come in tomorrow. Harasha let's try and meet and I can assist your endeavors. PM me your phone number and I will call you when there.

Brent - hope to see you back on the forum soon. I hope you settle in quickly in TX.

Let me add my kudos to the group that met at Andy's table. And my personal apologies to Andy's neighbors, I think we caused a bit of a traffic jam there. At one time there was Jeff, Roman, Bob, Zohar, me, Rich and Dave (my crew) there with Andy on the other side of the table. Missed FilthyBroke and Harasha, sorry guys.

Nice to add some faces to members - Roman and Jeff. I regret that we didn't take the time for a group photo. Roman, Jeff, and Bob had some very pretty specimens that they shared. We attempted to go to Oscars for lunch but they were closed for renovations - decided to go to Starbucks for sugar and caffeine instead.

Very little quality Canadian material today. I bought the nicest piece I saw, a 1931 25c in a PCGS 64 holder. Only 36 holes left to fill in my decimal Registry set. I also picked up a few Colonial tokens as trading fodder.

Checked out the Canadian material in the Stack's auction. The 1898 set of British Columbia gold 1/2D and 1D coins looked pretty cool. Whomever wins that set should be pleased. The 2 PCGS MS66 silver dollars (1935/1936) do not look like their photos in the catalogues - the colors are there but not vibrant. I have to say the photos are juiced and the toning actually present hide some bag marks. I will not be bidding on these.

As noted in another thread, PCGS was not taking submissions. When I passed teir table is was vacant, only fliers and forms and some trinkets were there. NOTE to PCGS: I think you missed an oppurtunity this year. Your competitor was very busy.

There were more ancients and medals dealers this year than in previous years. And Charles Davies did not have his usual enormous book inventory.

Already looking forward to next year! Which is going to be the 2nd weekend because New Years Day is on a Tuesday.

Gary, I looked through one of the coolest stacks of slabbed Palestine coins at the Goldberg table today image talked to the guy at the table about it and hopefully added to the buzz. It's a shame that you're selling it, but hope you'll be happy with the prices it brings.

Here's a real OOPS! moment - sat in the Stacks auction for 4 hours until realizing the silver is being auctioned tomorrow and today is ancients and gold. I did see a very nice Cuban 1915 proof 20 Pesos hammer at $75,000 and a rather exceptional Wurzburg 10 Ducats at $55,000.

My brother drove in last night. Met up with Zohar and they talked German Thales and medals. Afterwards took him up to the bourse and left him with Andy and Harold (dealer from Germany). Since there's barely anything for me here, I picked up a VARGAS 8 reales from James at NEN in an VG08 holder to play the resubmit game, since it's a low VF in my opinion. Plus the price was good enough to be able to spend another $50 bucks or so on it and still be able to sell it afterwards on eBay for my cost. There's considerate wear on the piece, but it has a pleasant tone and the "8" and "R" on the reverse is fully visible, which is not the norm for. These crude issues.

After last nights fiasco at the auction, decided not to sit in the room for the crowns portion of Stacks today, so put my bids in online and just going to let them ride.

Thanks Roman, I'm glad SOMEONE noticed! You're right, IT IS a shame but, health and a few other factors will not allow me to enjoy the recent grading and registry (and upgrading) of this 25 year endeavor. Gary, hopefully you're taking your vitamins, because I'm looking forward to seeing you at CICF!

No new purchases for me, but I did end up selling pretty much everything I came here with. One coin remains, but I will do a giveaway on the forums instead when I come home. It definitely has the coolness factor associated with it, but it also looks like someone took a wire brush to it. Problem free it's a $400+ coin. It's an 1813/2 Guadalajara 8 reales. What's cool about it, other than the mere fact it's an early war of independence issue, is that it was struck on a cast planchet and it also has the early Guadalajara edge design, which was slightly different from the usual circle and square colonial pattern, replacing circles with flowers.

Last thing before flying home tomorrow morning is the auction tonight. I think I'm still going to watch the lots I put absentee bids on and might potentially go higher due to the good amount of sales I did today.

Back home and I don't have to post from my iPhone.
Well, today certainly was an improvement over Friday.
Started off by meeting Zohar. You have no idea (or maybe you do) how great it is to talk to someone about one's hobby. I know no one who has a similar interest, at work or after work.
We went around to various dealers and shared some sorts on them and their stock. Zohar made some great points, which is one of the reasons why collectors need someone to bounce their thoughts.

Anyway, back to actual items. I originally went to the show looking for British coronation medals, medals featuring horses, medals with a Madonna motif and Salzburg thalers (the first and the last I blame on two members of the forum). I really found nothing, at least which called to me. You know that feeling. There is something about an item that moves your numismatic soul. Actually, Karl Stephens had a George III coronation medal, but no where near the condition I would want.

However, while wandering around, three times I heard that soft voice calling me, "Make me yours."
The first item was an incredibly detailed baptism medal, sold to me by a dealer introduced by Zohar.
The second item, though not a medal, was a thaler of Brunswick et al featuring a horse. Actually, I knew that these thalers existed, but I never saw a real one. It was love at first sight.
Finally, a complete surprise, was the spotting of a Genoese Scudo. Again, not a medal, but a real nice depiction of a Madonna.

I have a whole bunch of imaging to do now and I will post once imaged.

So you picked up the baptisimal medal! If its the one I am thinking about its a wonderful piece.

Keep in mind that not all dealers are the same. While a lot had gem pieces (for gem prices, in most cases), some did target less collectors that did not need to have the best grade available or just don't have as much to spend. From what I saw, those dealers, while selling problem coins, did not ask for a lot for them.

Some did and thats what surprised me. Raw cleaned coins for slabbed coin money. One dealer for example had a cleaned XF Caballito short ray for 250, and not only was it cleaned and XF, it was a long ray!

All my plans collapsed Thursday (the fact that PCGS does not accept submissions at this show certainly did not help my decision ;/ ...), and just didnt/couldn't go - glad you guys had fun!

Gary maybe we'll meet up at CICF this year - I did not have an opportunity to see what Goldberg's has - but like Roman mentioned ditto and I do congratulate you on a 25yr endeavor too..you did good.

I suppose you meant you are having some of the pieces re-graded, and if so I wish you luck.
  • ZoharZohar Posts: 6,654 ✭✭✭✭✭
Agree re slabbed/cleaned material. Goldberg's upcoming auction (and show display) had many of these pieces. I guess its fair disclosure to buyers regarding coin condition yet I would have thought they would have access to problem free coins for the sale.

I had an overly successful show. So much so that I was relieved I got shut out at Stack's.

I went 2/2 with Heritage; two gem talers (one Hogmouth, and one Freibourg 4Fr). I picked up two attractively toned German talers in 63, one ex-Eliasberg. I also picked up two Italian silver crown-sized coins: Firenze 10 paoli and a piastra from the Papal States. At CNG, a gorgeous Teutonic taler on Friday, and two Anglo Saxon silver minors on Saturday.

The icing on the cake? I went to Luke's Lobster Shack in the East Village and ate two rolls (1 lobster, 1 crab).

Seriously, though, I've no clue how I'm going to pay off this stuff. image

  • Hey guys! I just now arrived back in NC after having a fantastic time at the show. I really enjoyed meeting you all, and thanks Jeff for setting it up for us.image

I fought what seemed like a pretty heavy crowd for the first couple of hours at the show, to the point that some of the more interesting tables were nearly impossible to get a good look at. So for a breather I took my son and headed out to see a museum (as I had promised him). He's not really into coins yet, but couldn't pass on a trip to NYC. After a nice walk through the MOMA, I got back to the show and spent the evening just browsing the huge selections.

I didn't find much that first day, so I decided to check back in Saturday morning before I had to leave. The crowd must not have been in full force at opening time, so I had much better luck. I had some nice conversations with a couple of dealers I hadn't met before, and had time to sit and look things over more thoroughly. I would call it a great success, and a trip well worth the time.

Again, what a nice treat to meet Jeff, Zohar, Roman, and CarlosJ! I hope you all have a great time there, I wish now that I could have stayed a little longer.

At the JFK waiting on my flight. It was a great show. Definitely learned a lot and meeting Darksiders is always fun! (yes, even dealers image ).

My evening ended with a Ponterio win. I picked up a pleasantly toned 1745 pillar in MS61. I'll post coins pics once I get everything in-hand.

Ended up winning a Salzburg taler at MS-65 which I feel good about after seeing it at the Stack's pre auction show room. I will write it up in detail when received yet it was a close call as my computer crashed and the reboot got me back on line petty much just in time to bid.

Almost forgot a very important trip I made on Friday. Took a cab to Sotheby's and checked-out their preview of the Hispanic Society collection of Archer M. Huntington. There was about 10% on display out of the 38,000 coins in the collection. Some of the pieces I saw were truly amazing. At the entrance there was a display with a beautiful Ferdinand and Isabella (1469-1504) 50 Excellentes. Struck around 1479 it was probably a presentation, or award piece to someone whom the King and Queen wished to honor. It's approximately 5 ounces and is believed to not only be unique, but also the largest gold coin of the 15th Century in existence.

There were also 3 early 17th Century Royals on display!

The War of Independence section of the preview was also pretty cool. Among various Zacatecas and Vargas pieces, there was a wonderful coin I was seeing "live" for the first time since I've started to collect W4I in 2006 - an authentic 1811 Real Del Catorce (San Luis Potosi) 8 Reales.

Another neat thing I saw in the collection was a crude barbaric counterfeit 8 Escudos in gold nested next to authentic examples. It was fun seeing that contrast in design right next to each other.

Big THANK YOU to Andy Lustig for "making" me go image It was quite an experience.

I think there was a lot of modern China of all shapes and sizes. There were a couple of dealers there that modern China is all they do, but they were spread out through the different rooms. It also seemed very expensive for the few pieces I saw a price on.

To echo JCM's comment - most China I saw at the show was modern.

Just checked with NCS and it appears they were able to remove a few small spots of PVC on the 1763/2 MF 8 Reales I bought from Mike Dunigan without touching any of the toning. I hope that's true and will post my observations and pictures once I receive it sometime next week. NGC gave it an AU58 grade, which I agree with 100%. The coin had just a hint of wear with fantastic luster and light toning throughout.

Uh-oh. They shipped the coin on the 12th and tracking still shows it at the Sarasota sorting facility. I'm hoping it's just a tracking issue, but looking at canadapost site, it appears this tracking number hasn't crossed the border into Canada yet.
