sorry for the lack of weekly updates everybody, I've been on vacation with no access to the internet. Try it sometimes, it's really weird!
I see the mint has a new pricing sheet, but they have neglected to show the Criteria at the beginning as they have in the past. link to US Mint pricing sheet
starting 10/08/14, Gold price remains the same, Platinum prices down $50/oz
7 days ending 10/08/14
Gold avg: $1208.55 (down $5.25); Criteria #1 (no change); AGE (proof) $1560 (but sold out); AGE (Unc) $1525
Platinum avg: $1256.80 (down $43.60); Criteria #2 (change); APE (proof) $1650 (2014 coin available 10/20/14)
NOTE: Platinum has dropped more than $84 in the last 2 weeks; more than $112 in the last 3 weeks, and more than $144 in the last 4 weeks, more than $214 in 6 weeks (that's a 17% drop). Time to buy, or will the carnage continue??
OK, so I have a bit of catching up (I had very limited access over the holidays . . . hope you all had a great holiday as well)
Bottom line, Gold & Platinum prices are the same today as they were when I posted 3 weeks ago . . .
week 12/17/14 to 12/24/14, Gold & Platinum prices went down from the previous week Gold avg: $1192.00 (down $18.40 from the previous week); Criteria #2 (change); AGE (proof) $1510 (but sold out); Kennedy Proof $1165 Platinum avg: $1195.60 (down $27.20); Criteria #2 (change); APE (proof) $1550 (out of Stock)
week 12/24/14 to 12/31/14, Platinum price went up from the previous week, Gold price remained the same Gold avg: $1193.25 (up $1.25 from the previous week); Criteria #1 (no change); AGE (proof) $1510 (but sold out); Kennedy Proof $1165 Platinum avg: $1211.00 (up $15.40); Criteria #2 (change); APE (proof) $1600 (out of Stock)
week 12/31/14 to 01/07/15, Gold price will go up from the previous week, Platinum price remains the same Gold avg: $1200.25 (up $7.00 from the previous week); Criteria #2 (change); AGE (proof) $1560 (but sold out); Kennedy Proof $1202.50 Platinum avg: $1213.25 (up $2.25); Criteria #1 (no change); APE (proof) $1600 (out of Stock)
An informal poll...should the Mint make either BU or Proof fractional platinum eagles in 2017, the 20th anniversary of platinum eagles?

Shouldn't the Proof Platinum Eagles, if they were available, be less than the Gold Proofs now? Platinum is running quite a bit under gold these days.

The US mint places an additional $40 premium to platinum proofs than gold proofs, were they to have the same spot price range. Note that the ranges are in $50 spans, so if platinum was $49 less expensive than gold, it could theoretically be in the same "range" (ie. $1200-$1249), but their cost would be $40 more (gold=$1560, vs Plat=$1600)
So for their mint cost to be lower, Platinum would have to be in the range lower than gold, and this would only result in $10 difference. That could happen were Platinum to be almost $100 cheaper spot price, so with that great of a difference, you could only see $10 difference in Mint price.
Nooker, There was no price change, from previous week, in gold proof coins at the mint as of 4/22, Wednesday 11:15 AM PDT. AGE proof is currently $1510 and Buffalo is $1540. Al
so this was one of those strange cases whereby the avg price for the week ($1202.50) is in the price range ($1200-$1249), which would make the 1oz price go up to the next level ($1560).
However, the PM close on Wed afternoon 4/22/15 ($1189.25) was still in the lower level ($1150-$1199) which causes the price to stay at it's previous level ($1510). I think they call this Criteria 3 (no change). I can't find the Mint's description of these "Criteria", but my understanding is that what happened last week
starting 04/29/15, Mint price for Gold remains the same, & Platinum down $50/oz this week
7 days ending 04/29/15

The Wed PM close =$1209, so I believe this still results in a "no change", but it's one of these strange situations, and the Mint doesn't publish their "Criteria" any more)
**** Note - the 1 ounce 2015 Uncirculated gold coin will go on sale tomorrow Thursday, 4/30/15
