PCGS not accepting coins at NYINC

TPRCTPRC Posts: 3,794 ✭✭✭✭✭
First time coming to the NYINC, so when I saw that PCGS was going to be there, I collected a group of coins for grading. That is until I learned that PCGS will not be accepting submission at NYINC. Disappointing. If this is the biggest international coin show in the country, why would they not set up?
Just curious.

Probably because PCGS mainly grades US coins and they are at the FUN show.

This doesn't seem right to me. I thought that they would accept submissions, but no on-site grading. Coins would be collected, send back to home base, assessed and then returned from home base.

    Anyone clarify or confirm?

EVP, you are correct. It doesn't sound right. I would think they would accept coins but no on site grading.

Will PCGS be at NYINC? If so, what will they do there?

I hope you guys are right. I called PCGS and was told that they would only be there to answer questions and would not accept coins for grading. I'll call again right now.

According to the NYINC site, PCGS has a table there.

I know...that is why I packed up the coins for grading. I'm on the phone with them now.

I suspect you are correct....simple business decision....but disappointing. Still on hold.

Sounds like they are doing everything they can to alienate their world coin customers. Sad. I prefer PCGS.

OK. I called again and it was confirmed to me that PCGS will not accept coins for grading...at all.
Again, disappointing, but better to know now rather than carrying valuables around NYC for several days.

  • Why bother to show up at all?

    Very good question.

    Yes, very good question.

I wonder if they are trying to drum up business for their Paris office from the international dealers at the show.

I was told that most international submissions go through their Paris office, so that is possible. I think I was also told that this is the first year they have had a table, but I am not 100% sure of that.

NGC will also not have a world coin grader at NYINC, just their ancients guy.

I don't think that they are, but I wouldn't bet on it either. Noone in their right mind would pay $45 per coin vs $25 in the US, including the recent $7 increase, and similar differences for pricier tiers, without counting the lack of a Modern Tier all together. This huge price increase in the Paris office might cost them very dearly and they are already putting a lot of exclusive PCGS reps ,practically out of business, if that was their exclusive business. The drop in numbers is going to be dramatic month after month.

Me too, but let's face it. What is the percentage of world coin submissions compared to the US submissions? If these boards are any indication, I've noticed here on the Darkside, that for several days, picked randomly ,there have been 12 hours or more between one reply and the next.

Could be that Darksiders see the difference between talking a lot and saying a lot? image

But I agree and have been saying it for years - PCGS in US does not care about the World Coin folks. I've always felt that we're "tolerated" more than anything.

the last 2 nyinc's I attended they took submissions....that's really strange giving business like that to NGC who I would bet will be taking submissions....

Just to make sure that the two individuals that I spoke with at Customer Service are not wrong (they appeared knowledgeable and certain), I also emailed PCGS. Should hear tomorrow and I'll update if there is a change. Otherwise, I'll submit in Baltimore or mail in.

I went ahead and filled out online submission forms for the other guys, they are accepting submissions at the show.

I am surprised- if PCGS had a table, they almost always take submissions- just no onsite grading at NYINT

    Received from PCGS:

    Good Afternoon Mr. Powell:

PCGS will have a table and representatives available to discuss our services. However, you are correct as PCGS will not be taking submissions (of any kind).

    Kind Regards,

    Trista

It would if PCGS didn't have a dedicated World Coin grader and all their US graders were at FUN.
  • ajaanajaan Posts: 17,417 ✭✭✭✭✭
They don't need a grader to just accept coins for submission to be taken back to CA.

Hmm, good point. I was still too focused on the whole grading at the show thing.

Perhaps they do not want to provision the armored transport services? No idea.

Or maybe it's just too much of a hassle to do that business in NYC. Last time I went to NYINC I had a tough time getting home through security. My Chinese charms and amulets must have looked a little bizarre in the Xray machine.

Thanks for saving me the trip with this notice. I would have had a few expensive pieces in my pocket for no use...and bad feelings.

I am very surprised and disappointed that they are not even accepting submissions at this major show.

I also am very distressed that no one cared to explain why this is so...or any explanation at all that would have been appropriate.

However I look at it - makes no cents!
