UPDATE - Received my grades today:

My two Cameos are the first cameos to be designated as FS-105, a single SP67 is the only other coin in the Pop report in addition to my 3 coins.

Taking off on Type2's post...I actually just came across this coin last night, and came to the board to research the 1966 DDO SMS Kennedy and saw his post.

Can you tell if this is the 1966 DDO "Doubled profile" from these photos?

  • There are so many DDO's on these halves I can't keep track of them..

  • Based on your pictures, I would guess DDO-007. It just went into the 5th edition of the Cherrypickers Guide. Pick up points are the die scratchese in front of the first 6 in the date.

    Good pick up.

  • Yes it is..Great find

Whatever the current bid is, I double it!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

It appears to be one of the doubled dies for the 1966 SMS halves. Which one I do not know. Nice pick up. I cherrypicked a couple of these 1966 DDO SMS halves many years ago. They are two of my favorite Kennedy halves. Both are possible Cameos. The obverse of your coin looks like it may be a Cameo also. What does the reverse look like?

Pricing info is all over the board on these things from my limited research...Heritage has sold several of them noted as "Minor Variety" DDO's. CoinFacts includes 3 photos attributed as FS-103, but one I believe is a different DDO than the other 3 showing much stronger doubling on the motto than the other two examples show.

Caleb & his dad helped me out with some attribution info via e-mail and based upon the photo, it looks like a lock -007 as Caleb indicated. Anxious to get home tonight and look again, as well as take a look at a couple others that I set aside.

I believe the coin would CAM (...as would the others I put aside).

I'm starting to get a bit excited now. image

I've had a bunch of these and the doubling can range from under the chin to way up the nose
and I think they are real neat even if they are a common error.

Another DDO I have to check... when the next big snowstorm comes, I am going to pull out all my Kennedy halves and review them... Cheers, RickO

I did have a chance to look at this coin last night and snap a few better pictures of it. In addition, the two brothers I had set aside also have turned out to be the DDO-007, with the same die scratches in front of the first 6 in the date. Here are the pictures.

Interestingly, the 3rd one is completely covered in "lint strike throughs" similar to the coin used at the Variety Vista to illustrate the variety.

    Interesting.

Of course after reviewing the Variety Vista pictures, the doubling on the profile appears to be of the most significance since the doubling on the lettering appears to be barely discernable.

I guess the only reason this one made it into the CPG is because of those "die markers".

Whatever. The sale of your two "extra's" will more than cover any costs associated with getting the three graded and attributed.

    You lucky snausage!

Interesting to find three of the same die. Were they all purchased from the same source...perhaps a box of 5 sets?

Just got my grades on the submission of these three DDO's.

    2 1 24340956 510552 1966 50C SMS USA SP65CA
    2 2 24340957 510551 1966 50C SMS USA SP64
    2 3 24340958 510552 1966 50C SMS USA SP65CA

My coins are the first two Cameos graded, a single SP67 is the only other coin in the Pop report attributed as FS-105 in addition to my 3 coins.

My PM function is enabled for anyone that's interested.
  • Nice coins, I love the PL SMS coins
