Anyone else getting destroyed in Heritage?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
I have been outbid on everything, and everything is going for well above what I thought it would.
I guess its a good sign for the coin market but wow its frustrating!

Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm 4/10 at the moment but within inches of being outbid on everything. Some that I'm interested in are still lower than I expected while others are way above where I thought they'd be.

And just when I thought I was getting good at predicting these... image

The spread, diversity, and quality of this auction are truly impressive, and I'm sure it's causing quite a few people to come out of the woodwork.

There are a few that I am interested in. There is one that I really want that is over my budget and well above PCGS guide. I put in a very strong bid anyway which means that I am not seriously bidding on the others. I have the winning bid currently but I still have to go through Live bidding. Most likely I will end up with none of themimage

The one coin I bid on in early December I won for much less than I thought I'd have to pay.

Did you go after that great looking 66 10$ Lib in the OGH little while ago, even I thought that was a under-graded gem and I avoid the yellow stuff mostly.

The Dukor Saints are going for stupid money compared to recent auction results. Yeah, the quality is good, but there appears to be "Dukor fever" or the beginning of a boost in the market. Will be interesting to see the Legend market report in a week or so.

I'm so far still ahead on 3 of my coins, of which I would like to get two of them - the expensive and the non-expensive, not the non-expensive and non-expensive ones!

I am going to lot viewing later this morning - before dealer set up.
We may go to a few live sessions - but I have yet to place any Internet
    bids.

One coin I wanted is already close to my max, but two others are languishing. image

The single coin on my list hasn't been bid up yet. So, I have a shot. I am waiting for the live auction. I give myself a 25% chance of winning the lot. Most other lots of interest are bid beyond what I would pay.

No. All it says is that as usual, there is quite a bit of nice material at FUN, and that people make strong bids for this material. This may carry over into other areas, as collectors bring serious money to FUN. I have never won a single coin at a FUN auction.

My strong bid is still in the lead for the one Lib $2.50 I want. That can easily change with over a day to go.

So... I had the high internet bid when they ended internet bidding on a coin yesterday. This morning my high bid still stood. This afternoon I see that I was outbid even though Live is not up to this coin yet (Session 2 tonight). How did I get outbid? Can phone/mail bids still be accepted after they close the internet bidding? Not sure I want to go any higher on this one but still thinking about it...

Mail bids, in person bids, and/or legacy member bids could have snuffed you out.
  • it is happening just as you describe. I had a piece that was going to be the most i ever bought a coin (proof cam seated dollar) and it will sell for more than any other has before. It may be time to sell my stuff if this is where prices are.

Can phone/mail bids still be accepted after they close the internet bidding?

Legacy clients can bid via the Internet until one hour before the Floor session starts.

I was high bidder going into the live bid on two lots. Lost one at $1400, with my max $1355 bid. This one sold for $1323 including the juice four years ago, when I was underbidder by $40. Good thing I was not in love with this coin. Some Heritage Live bidder won it.

Other lot went for $2600 bid, my max bid $2555. PCGS suggested retail was $2600, which is 15% below what this one went for today. The floor bidder must have really like the looks of this coin.

I know it smacks of conspiracy but are all these fabulous prices real
Or are some being bought back by consignors ?
I don't have a dog in this fight but it just seems a strange
pattern; in fact offerings in my darkside area were rather scant.
In the past when I wanted something bad enough I bid crazy and generally & mysteriously got my coins at or very near max bid.

And I am not a "hater", just a bit curious munching popcorn watching the game. I actually LIKE Hertage, just to be clear, but kind of view them as a shark in the pond - big, beautiful and dangerous. Likely will use them when it's time to sell in fact.

Had this happen to me in a Heritage auction last year. I bid way over price guide and none of the under bidders were even close when the Internet bidding closed, yet the live bidding opened and closed right at my high bid. Seemed kind of odd to me because my high bid wasn't a number that could be figured out in any rational way (it wasn't a round number or a multiple of any of the price guides), but I was prepared to shell out what I bid so I didn't really worry about it.

Still have 2 cheapies left - I might win 1 of those!

That's not the definition of getting destroyed. You're probably lucky to have been shut out.
Everybody's a "winner" at auction regardless of the price paid.........well, at least until they try to resell the items. That's when the big losers finally get identified.
And in a major auction with thousands of lots, there will be many more losers than winners.

  • I noticed the 1794 dollars brought in very strong numbers. Still have my eye on some items, but bids are definately strong.

I got distroyed alright... distroyed on a coin I sold in the last Heritage auction. I guess the coin I sold wasn't part of this Heritage bull market
