OTW Thread Violation # 12?

Morning,

We discussed this a couple of weeks ago and It just keeps getting worse. I have Buyers buy stuff all the time and pay Invoice before I can get it adjusted to reflect combined shipping. So when I refund Overshipping payment I get screwed by E-Bay for their fee on shipping each time.

I check my stuff 20-30 times per day, if he would have waited 15 minutes I would have fixed Invoice.

I cannot have my stuff set up with Set Shipping Rules because I sell many different types of items across many genres.

Today guy buys 17 Individual cards, All listings cleary state "DO NOT PAY FOR YOUR ITEMS UNTIL I CAN FIX INVOICE TO REFLECT COMBINED SHIPPING!". And that shipping is $2.50 for 1-10 Raw cards, and $3.00 for 11-50 Raw cards.

He pays for 17 Cards and 17 Shipping charges of $2.50 each ($42.50 Shipping for 17 Raw Cards), Fee to E-Bay .28 cents each=$4.00 in unnecessary costs to me fro 16 extra shipping Fees. So I am getting frustrated with this and am trying to figure out what to do????

1. Cancel 17 transactions?
2. Contact Buyer and attempt to explain what he is doing wrong? (Good Luck with that!) And then, he can do what to help the situation?
3. Just refund shipping overpayment and Eat the Cost which seems to be happening on the magnitude of 3-5 times per week anymore?
4. Refund overshipping Minus the $4.00 he cost me and possibly Piss him off if he's paying attention?
5. Option #3 ??????????
6. Option #4 ??????????

Any ideas, suggestions, ect?

Thanks

Neil

  • Just do the free shipping thing and then most (not all, but most) buyers do not expect a shipping discount at all and you are better off in the end.
  • #4 is the way to go. You will send him a $35.50 refund with the explaination that the shipping charge was $3, plus another $4 for the fees you incurred through ebay on the $42.50 total he paid you.

So the buyer will get his 17 cards, and an 83% refund on what he thought he had to pay in shipping costs. You now have a loyal customer for life. image

I see what you did there.

  • << <i>There is the slight chance, however slim, that he actually wants each card sent separately.

I've had buyers do the same thing, and I simply sent each card separately as paid for. Just because I offer combined shipping doesn't mean the buyer has to take advantage of it.

That said, you can simply email the buyer and ask if he would like the shipping combined ... for this order, or at least for future orders. For me it wasn't worth the extra time and hassle to email the buyer about this, so I just sent them as paid for and it's worked out.

EDIT: These instances were all for PSA slabs though ... >>

    Afternoon,

I would just feel stupid sending 17 cards in 17 packages, my take on this is that there could be alot of reasons that this happens

    1. Buyer doesn't get it, how E-Bay and Paying for Combined Invoices works and how it impacts Sellers
    2. Buyer doesn't pay attention to what they pay
    3. Buyer doesn't Care what they pay (Amount)
    4. Buyer does this over and over because they know that most Sellers will issue refund for Exhorbinant overpayment of Shipping Charges and doesn't understand E-Bay charges the Seller for this
    5. Buyer is only shopping on E-Bay occasionally, sees what they want, buys it and want to be done with it...NOW!

In this case Buyer has 1200 Feedback as Buyer, no Selling whatsoever, so is just a Consumer and has no clue of or interest in what happens with/to the Seller, just send me my Product! Period.

I will be refunding as Gecko first mentioned, can't see any overwhelming reason not to just deal with it in that manner. Although I will NOT be providing an explanation, most likely he will just be gratified that he got a Rebate and if he has any questions about the Why's or How's he can ask.

    Thanks

I was going to say why would anyone pay 42.50 for shipping?
    He obviously doesn't care...

  • why are you charging anything for shipping; it made sense when Ebay wasnt getting their cut, but now it only hurts you not to roll it into the price, and by doing so your guaranteed 5 star positive in one category correct?
  • I think I would email the buyer and ask to cancel the transactions letting them know that you would prefer to ship them together to save the money for that person. That way, ebay doesn't screw you and the buyer realizes that you are going out of your way to save them money. Win-win.

Number 4 would be my answer. I would also change to free shipping if this is going to take up a lot of your time.

I did get one thing out of the other thread about sellers refusing to combine shipping. Of course they are sending items in one package, to the seller, the only thing they are not combining are the charges AND they do not deserve a neg if they ship that way.

Boy, I am going to get blasted on that statement..............but I'll stand by it.

As mentioned reach out to the buyer and let them know what they did wrong going forward. I have had two buyers this week do this and one of them bought 5 different things from me ending during the same hour and said that he honestly didn't even notice they came from the same seller. He would win and pay within seconds.

I agree about giving a refund minus any extra fees incurred and did just that and explained to the 2 buyers what happen and they both were understanding.

Now I have also had people pay for items seperately, then when I try to reach out to them they just don't respond back. So I have around 400 bubble envelopes chilling in my closet so I don't mind shipping each item individually if they don't respond.

Really though to the idiot who pays $42.50 total in shipping and then doesn't message you in say 48 hours with the question of , "um do you combine shipping I am a turd and didn't notice how badly I overpaid ya" I wonder how likely they are to even complain after the fact that you charged too much for shipping. May be worth the extra profit every now and again to just let it happen. Actually I have 0 low stars right now for shipping charges so I will try just this the next time someone overpays instead of waiting on an invoice and let the board know if they complain after the fact or not.

On another random eBay note I had someone win a $90 item off me at the end of November and I tried to message them 8 days later asking if they wanted the item or not since they didn't pay and then gave them 3 days before I opened a NPB complaint. They finally paid me at the last possible moment but my PayPal account shows they somehow double paid. I messaged them the next day asking if they had trouble trying to pay via PayPal and they still refused to respond. Am I a bad person for not refunding the double payment? Now that I am thinking about the item I will message them one more time to make sure they are happy with it and if they still refuse to respond then bank error in my favor. They left me positive feedback at least.

    heh.

glad i read the above. you considering the concealment of someone's banking error because they won't communicate with you about it.

    and you question my ethics?

I've done #4 several times with no complaints. I don't even explain the deduction. Never had anybody ask either.

It was written as a joke. I messaged them again, I wouldn't have even attempted to reach out to them after the fact if I planned to screw them over, the banking error is in reference to that Monopoly card but that went over your head. They will either respond to me or they will get a refund on the last day I can issue it. Unlike you I have no intention of ripping them off. Oddly though from google searchs on the issue it looks like it is more likely that PayPal issued a double payment in error not the buyer. Usually when you pay via eBay once you make a payment the system is setup so you can't pay twice by mistake.

just like the joke about me trying to rip people off.

neither of us would go around boasting about such a practice on THIS website, now would we?

Sometimes people that pay multiple shipping charges just don't care, like myself for instance.
I've won 5 items from an individual seller and paid for each item separately with full shipping paid for each item. The last thing I want is to be hassled by some seller over $15 or $20. I left positive feedback for each item and received them all in a single package.
I have a feeling that I am in the minority on this though.

    Morning,

Are you saying you would feel hassled by the Seller if he refunded you your $15-$20 overpaid in shipping? Or something else. I always wornder about this because as with the example I used to start this tread, I refunded the guy $35 Bucks last night and as usual have never heard a word, never a Thank You, not once in the hundreds of times I've done this. Never once have I been thanked for being honest, do you as a Buyer just expect this?
I don't know because when as a Buyer myself, I would never overpay and always ask for and wait for a combined Invoice.

Free shipping. Free shipping. Free shipping. Each of the 17 items you sold were capable of selling on their own at the total delivered price - item cost + shipping charge. You arrive at the delivered price of say $7.50 by either listing an item for $5.00 and $2.50 shipping, or $7.50 with free shipping. Which listing method has the greatest potential to promote profitable sales giving you the least amount of payment issues?
  • fergie23fergie23 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭✭
For me I don't care if you refund my shipping or not. If I cared I would wait for a combined invoice or ask for one.
If you feel like issuing me a refund good for you. If not I am not going to lose any sleep over it. I am certainly not going to spend my time responding to a seller's question as to whether I want a refund or not.
Again I imagine I am in the minority on eBay over this. When I sold if someone paid too much for shipping I would simply include some cash in the package to refund the buyer. I don't remember if anyone thanked me or not and honestly didn't care. You should not expect gratitude for following your own procedures.
    Cheers,

    Robb
  • I still dont understand why your not rolling the shipping cost into the card price, and listing with free shipping, which will give you better listing preference and a guarantee 5 star.
