I have something else I was thinking about and want to add, as well. I want to get something new for the collection every month. It doesn't matter what, as long as I get something new. I didn't get anything new in March, July or either October or November 2011, it's the closest I've ever come to adding something new every month of the year. There's still a lot of quarters I need from the Park series, so maybe I'll even be able to knock off half the months with change finds again like I did in 2011.
1) Stop talking about those blasted 25th ase sets 2) Learn more about numismatics and grading to prepare for: 3) Start working on a Jefferson nickel set 4) Start working on completing my father's Walker half set.
I'm a modern PM coin collector, but after attending show after show I'm find myself staring at nickels and Walkers halves routinely so I may as well stop fighting the urge and start learning more about classic coins.
1. Buy the last three years of Numismatist I need (1902, 1906 and 1907) and hope the drunken fools who outbid me on these twice this year have all they need.
2. Upgrade my 04-S Barber half (if not by grade, at least by "look").
3. Add to my AU Indian Cent collection, was working backwards from 1909 and just hit 1877.
1. To purchase a certified Matte Proof Lincoln Cent, RB or RD with attractive color; 2. To purchase another overdate Buffalo Nickel, preferably in mint state or as high of grade as finances permit; 3. To purchase a Charlotte or Dahlonega gold coin, probably in VF or so, but I would love to track down a nice EF40 or AU+ example; 4. Another monster rainbow toned peace dollar or a full proof-like example; 5. To purchase another proof-like coin probably from the Bust series, or from an esoteric denomination;
Finish an MS 64 set of Peace Dollars (well-struck with clean surfaces). Need six coins with the 1928-s being the only real challenge left.
Make progress on a Proof 65 set of V-Nickels. There are 13 to go and they need to be without the ugly-toning that is so typical.
Come to the realization that I am never going to complete an AU set of business strike 3-cent nickel pieces. The 1884 and 1885 are never going to happen (but there is an 1883).
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.
1. Buy 2-4 very nice coins to bring along my date set 2. Avoid any impluse buys even if they are not expensive. 3. Continue to generally buy PCGS slabbed cons as a preference but stay open to others. 4. Just continue to learn, contribue to the forum and enjoy the hobby.
Very simple approach but always that easy to stick to.
1. Acquire a nice 2, or 3 coin "investment" collection, either early gold or the silver $1 draped bust type 2. Hold on to them and avoid the urge to resell them 3. Also reacquire some common MS 65 saint gaudens pieces for a play on the gold rush
Reach at least 100 Bust Dime die marriages (currently at 86 - see sig line) Upgrade 15-20 VG and lower grade Bust Dime die marriages Add several pre-1830 Bust Dime die marriages because I only need 11 die marriages from 1830-1837! Add/Upgrade my Capped Bust Dime Registry Set - I'd like to reach at least 80% Continue cherrypicking rare die marriages right out from under Dimeman's Nose
-Keep having fun. -Push harder on the circulation collections/bank searches and hopefully fill a few holes. -Be persistent with searches on eBay and find a few more killer pieces. -Hit the small local shows a bit more in search of Lincoln cent varieties and hopefully find some nice RPMs.

Re number 10, I need to check the Baltimore dates for March. I might be going or maybe to the ANA. I would love to do lunch.

some changes: I am going to stop buying junk such as low graded Buffalo;s , Indian head cents, problem coins, common silver certificates, etc. I used to try to buy everything to keep people coming back with hopefully better stuff, but end up getting stuck with the crap sometimes selling at a small loss or no profit. Not this year, only buying what is saleable. They can take it somewhere else, even if i lose out on something good.
tighten up the spread on scrap gold just a we bit, as that is where the bulk of the $ made, come from.
often times I feel sorry for folks who are in dire need , and try to strecth a bit to help em out when they come in with stuff, not this year, the buy price is what it is.
try to keep a little better selection of items for sale in the store in case the lower level collector market comes back ?
for myself:
continue to look for the right coins for me to purchase to rebuild a collection of better date stuff for myself.
A few goals to strive for this coming year Lord willing and the creek don't rise;
1. Get a robust copy stand for my new DSLR and get back to imaging coins. That was fun until my Nikon point and shoot died. 2. Add a circ or AU $10 Indian to my collection. I just love that design. 3. Add a Fugio to my collection.
I am also looking forward to filling a few holes in my 7070. Could be another fun year.

Consolidation!! I have other collecting interests and the "resources" get watered down by too many purchases. That means decoys, postcards, english creamware, and coins!! I may go to a "two boxes of twenty" approach.
The concept of a prime number date set is very interesting.
Goals are to be more patient (always a big problem for me) and to buy the Best Coins for my limited resources, even if that means fierce competition drives up the price.
I'm going over to the dark side. More variety, more fun, and probably more profit potential.
Salute the automobile: The greatest anti-pollution device in human history! (Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)
I'm having more fun than yesterday. If that means I have to suffer through widgets another year, I will do it for the good of the people. And hopefully I wil get this note paid off .
To finish my Trade $ set I need an 1874-CC, 1875-S/CC and an 1878-CC. I doubt I will ,but will be happy if I can aquire 2 of the 3. I will also continue to try for a few upgrades within that set.
Here are two major ones I've settled on in the last day or two:
1. To reduce my overall holdings by 1/3; 2. to finally seek out a clipped 1933-D cent.
The "one-third" goal applies to many things in my life, not just my numismatic holdings; the things I have too much of (coins, general "stuff", weight, spending) I'm trying to reduce by 33%, while the things I have too little of (savings, family time) I'm aiming to increase by the same number.
Keeping with my "33" theme, I really want to fill that nagging hole in my clipped cent set. The '33-D is still the one coin I've never seen anywhere with a clip. I'm going to look at every one offered on eBay this year (seriously, not an exaggeration) until I find one.
Maybe to keep with the theme, I should drink more Rolling Rock too.

My 2012 goals were (from last December in this thread):
1. Buy 14 of the needed 42 New Orleans Silver coins needed for the completed New Orleans Registry set (by date) 2. Buy 8 of the 40 New Orleans Gold coins on my wish list. 3. Only spend money on coins obtained from selling something else on ebay. 4. Clean up the registry set with nice pictures and meaningful comments. 5. Delete the misc registry sets I signed up for late at night but only had a couple coins in. 6. Cross my two NGC gold eagles to PCGS. Hopefully as part of a quarterly club special.
And the results. 1. Exceeded. Bought 24 of the needed 42. Mostly raw, and they will be on the way to PCGS tomorrow. (Before price increase) 2. Failed (Due to lack of funds.) Bought 4, 2 of which will be going to PCGS tomorrow to cross from NGC. (Before new cross fee takes effect) 3. I didn't keep track but will give this one a met. I believe I sold more on ebay then I spent on coins this year. 4. Total failure. Never got started on this project. Disappointed in myself on this one. 5. Met. Re-evaluated my collecting goals and all 4 sets I stuck with are for the long term. 6. Failed. Well, kind of. See #2. They will be in the mail to PCGS tommorrow. They didn't have a quarterly club special this year that the fit under.
This is a reprise on Shamika's thread from last year. I enjoyed reading my response and then seeing how I fared.
Okay, time for the report card...
My goals for 2012:
1. Fewer coin purchases but better coins for the core U.S. gold collection
Nope. More coins. Some better. (C)
2. More work on registry set "side projects"
Yes. A+
3. Reduce the number of NGC-graded coins in my core collection. Zero is the ultimate goal, but I would like to get under five, which should be fairly easy to accomplish
Down to one NGC-graded coin in the coin collection (photo below) (A)
4. Update my website
I completely abandoned it after Apple discontinued their hosting service (Inc)
5. Obtain an early gold coin
Yes, an excellent 1800 $5 and the Bass 1818 $5 (A+) (Photos below)
6. Obtain a nice Bechtler dollar
Yes, an excellent pair (A) (Photos below)
7. Write an article for a coin website (not mine) or print publication
I did a Road Report as a guest for CRO, so that counts, right? (B)
8. Stick to the plan that I described a couple months ago with my boxes of 20 such that even thought I may continue to add coins, the overall number of coins remains constant
Hard to evaluate (Inc)
9. Attend a major coin show (ANA or Baltimore)
CSNS in Chicago, check. (B)
10. Have lunch or dinner (along with show-and-tell) with XF45 and Longacre
Had lunch with XF45 but have not seen Longacre for a couple of years . (B)
11. Spend some time with forum member, Dahlonega
Have not seen Dahlonega or GeorgeKellogg for a few years but hope to at FUN. (B)
12. Attend a meeting of the US Gold Coin Collectors Club
Did not make a meeting in 2013 but expect to at FUN (D)
Myself... I didn't accomplish my 2012 goals. I had three coins that I wanted to acquire and never found one that met my requirements. So it looks like I'll let it ride for 2013.
My goals: 1. Buy only coins that I feel sure that I want to keep. Continue to resist the urge to impulsively buy coins just because I'm bored. [A continuing resolution.] Still impulsively buying, but I plan to keep what I bought. 2. Buy 2 or 3 more Chapman catalogs. Nope, but I did buy a dozen nice 19th-century auction catalogs (dated to 1855). 3. Take JK's ANA summer course on coins that actually circulated during the colonial and early federal periods. At least I got this done, OK? 4. Carefully inventory and photographically document my collection. This will mean getting re-acquainted with some of my coins that I haven't looked at in years. Nope, and I'm not sure I will get around to doing this in 2013. 5. Buy a gem proof Seated dollar that hasn't been messed with. No, I blame RYK--he's a bad influence. I bought 4 DOGs instead. 6. Buy a red, gem proof Indian Head cent with orange-peel fields. No, but I did buy a proof IHC in 65. Ex-Eliasberg. 7. Buy some more interesting cut coins. You reading this, JK? I bought one. From Rick Snow! 8. Continue adding to my incomplete set of B. Max Mehl catalogs. Done, but my batting average still stinks. 9. Actually read all of the back issues of Penny-Wise (on a CD distributed to EAC members). Nope, but I have been reading lots of other EAC-related stuff. Does that count? 10.Formulate an acceptable solution for my book/catalog collection while there is still time (maybe try a bookcase of 500 approach?) Hopeless.
Maybe I should quit before I get even further behind, and not set goals for 2013.
