1866 5 cents help - RPD?

Hi,
My latest acquisition is an 1866 5 cents (ICG 53, planchet flaws) with some interesting features at the date. It doesn't look like the doubled-die pics I've seen. Any ideas what this is?

my guess is 1 of 2 things

1. strongest strike/ejection doubling i've seen to date, by far

2. poor attempt at a variety counterfeit i've been reading a lot about recently

To add a picture to your message. You have to use a program like Photobucket. You then copy the IMG code and paste it in your message box.

(Sorry missed a step) You have to upload your image to photobucket and then copy the IMG code and then carry it over to your message on the PCGS forum in the message box. I would not paste it in the same line your message is on. Skip a space and then paste it. Hope that helps.

It's strike doubling. No RPD.

By the way, doubling on the date of a shield nickel can never be a doubled die. Dates were hand-entered into dies after the dies were hubbed.

If you want to post enlarged photos of the whole coin, I'll look and see if there might be anything else going on.

It's not a counterfeit variety.

It's what I would call medium-strong strike doubling on a shield nickel - it's far from the strongest strike doubling I've seen.

Thanks for the large photos. I don't see anything of a variety nature going on with this coin. Still a nice collector coin.
