As found in the ground....no cleaning...Wisconsin soil
funny thing on this dug coin a canadian dime was underneath next to this dime
Note the nice "screwdriver scratch" from eye to rim next the "A"

That's a pretty good gash! But, I've put scratches on coins while using a pinpointer too. At least it wasn't a 16'd Merc!

    Do you own a pinpointer?

Thats not as bad as a friend of mine who was detecting here in ND with the ground frozen and no snow yet. He nailed a large cent with the spike end of a pick axe bring the coin up with it on the first swing. Kind of pi$$ed him off, not alot of large cents to be found here in ND.

A good pinpointer and caution with a narrow digger will avoid virtually all of these issues... sometimes, though, if there are more than one coin juxtaposed, it will happen anyway. Cheers, RickO

Glad I live in the desert. Just use a plastic scoop. Never need anything tougher than
that and never a metal object. But, then you don't find many coins just laying around
the desert where I search!! Never found a coin, yet!

Once you learn to use the screwdriver and after the edges are rounded this thing will not happen. I have never scratched a coin with my screwdriver.
