Great job on a nice looking set.Love those Bowmans!!!
I'm new here, some of you may recognize my name from Blowout or Sideline Sports Cards, but I saw this thread and needed to contribute a PC item of mine
I have a collection of PSA graded Giants cards from all years, I have 87 cards right now
Hi everyone!! Im new here and picked the 1950 Bowman Football set to be my 1st registry project. I collected as a kid in the mid 70's, and always dreamed of the cards from the 50's, especially the Bowman. Im 41, was to be married about 20 years ago, and a DD took my fiance and our 2 baby girls after running a red light. Not much to look foward to and after all this time Im finally taking on collecting again.
Im gonna attempt the set in psa-7 and up. I have about 12 cards thus far, some stars and 7 "commons". If anyone has any cards to trade or sell PLMK. Looking for "centering" as a main focus, but who is not? lol. I have some Ernie Davis 1962 Topps rc psa-7 for trade.
Im gonna read this thread from the start and wish everyone continued success in whatever it is they are searching for. I will be following along and better get a scanner I think. My pictures are not very good with my camera.
Thank you, Jeff.
The speed of light is faster than the speed of sound...That is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Lots of great stuff guys!! Love reading history behind the Bowman and looking at everyone's "finds". I hope to have some pictures of the start to my 1950 set. Continued success to everyone building Bowman!!!!
The speed of light is faster than the speed of sound...That is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Good luck. You can find some nice deals on PSA 7's from that set. I've picked up a few along the way of building my other sets, but am only about 10% of the way. Enjoy!
Not sure if any of you guys would be interested but I'm trying to start a little Facebook page to have fold post and comment about the cards we love or hate.
I finally reached 90% on my 1954 set this weekend (after admittedly overpaying on two cards on ebay). These last few cards are going to be fun to find.
<< <i>I finally reached 90% on my 1954 set this weekend (after admittedly overpaying on two cards on ebay). These last few cards are going to be fun to find. >>
Awesome!! Congrats and continued success the rest of the way!! What are you still needing and in what grade?
The speed of light is faster than the speed of sound...That is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
I need 12 cards. They are: 40 Otto Graham 65 Dick Chapman 73 Hugh Taylor 78 Les Richter 81 Dale Dodrill 84 John Bauer 89 Don Boll 92 Don Heinrich 95 Jerry Hilgenberg 108 Elbert Nickel 127 Joe Koch 128 Johnny Lattner
The Richter and Nickel are pretty easy to come by. I just need to pull the trigger on those. The Otto Graham pops up fairly often. It just needs to be there when I can win it. The other 9 are some of the hardest cards to come by in high grade in the set. I'm going for 7 or better with no qualifiers. I'm at 7.48 right now. It isn't challenging for the top, but it'll be a nice respectable 15th or 16th best when it is finished.
Set a snipe for a PSA 7 1954 Jerry Hilgenberg last night. I figured $50 was pretty safe. Nope. Seven bidders drove it up to $64.55. For a 7. So much for the theory that cards aren't still going up in value...
BigDaddyBowman paid a visit to the Navolanic household this week...wasn't that big of a deal since he lives within walking distance...anyways to make a long story short I added some 55 Bowman to the one's I got in an auction earlier this year and am now an official member of this thread...I'll soon be putting a set on the registry. This will not be a gangbuster go for broke NM/MT set but I'll settle for the 5, 6, and 7's I can find. For those not familiar with Ryan, he's the AD at my old high school and we've been friends for awhile....even though my kids go to one of their rival schools we still can get together and discuss the card hobby. THANKS RYAN for the Bowman's. Quality collector!!

Awesome, Ryan is a great guy.
Unfortunately when I got out of the Football cards we sorta lost touch, tell him I said hello please!
I will let Ryan know that Perkdog says Hey!! Probably will see him again before the end of the month....in the meantime please everyone enjoy these recent submissions that were from the auction I won in May
and here are some of the one's I recently convinced BigDaddyBowman to part with....like I said I don't plan to go crazy on this set but thought it would be nice to put together a nice EX/MT to NM set after getting back my recent submission. I have another group of the lower numbers that I plan to send in once I can pull some bucks together. I will probably be the only collector who has star cards graded higher than most of the commons.....
I just picked up a 1954 Elbert Nickel in PSA 7 off of ebay and CU Forum Member StanFan hooked me up on a Jerry Hilgenberg short print in PSA 8 from that set. That gets me down to 11 cards needed to complete the set. Thanks to StanFan for selling me a great card at below VCP.
I see that the #4 1954 set is being broken up and sold on ebay by Mint State. Sadly, the cards might be too nice for my budget. But I haven't seen some of these cards on ebay in a loooooong time.
Anyone interested in doing some trading? I'd put this on the trading board, but nobody ever goes there. Here's the deal. I am finding myself more and more happy with the PSA 6 card. It is Ex-Mt and I am generally satisfied with it, especially when it comes to older cards from the 50's. So, I am thinking about downgrading my sets into 6's. I've got most (93%) of a 1954 Bowman set in 7's and 8's, about 30% of the 1955 set in 7's and 8's, plus another fair amount of cards from the 48-53 sets that are mostly 7's (a few 8's, but not many). I've also got 10-12 1956 Topps football in PSA 7 and 8. I am going to make all of these available for trade if anyone is interested. What do I want? I want the same in return, but in PSA 6 (no qualifiers). Obviously, the trades would have to make fiscal sense (I won't be trading my 8 for your 6 of the same card). But, if you've got a bunch of 6's from these years and you've been wanting to go higher on the totem pole, perhaps I can help. I am just at the point where I just want some nice Ex-Mt sets without the competition for top spots. PSA 6 sets would allow me to do that. If you have any interest, drop me a PM.
Also, if you see something else and you want to make a trade offer (60's-70's cards or whatever), I'm open. But I prefer to trade, not to sell. Of course, everything is negotiable.
Pretty happy to add this to my collection. I prefer the 52 Smalls to the Larges, I know that goes against the mainstream grain, so let the taunting begin. Smalls were issued before the Larges, so are technically "The" set I love this thread!
I just stumbled upon this thread tonight. This is where my focus is right now. Im working on a '50 Bowman PSA 7 set and a '57 Topps PSA 7 set (or better). Alnavman those are some great looking '55 Bowmans. PowderedH20 check your PM.
I love it when something falls into your lap. I've been trying to get the last few cards of the 54 Bowman set, and the last six have been tough. Today, 4SC listed a PSA 7 Don Boll for $19.99. It took me about three seconds to pull the trigger on that one. I will gladly trade it (and anything else I have for 6's of the same cards plus something else. My goal will be to finish the set in a PSA 6, although almost all of my cards are 7's and 8's.
Just picked up the Otto Graham for the 54 set. I'm down to three cards (Hugh Taylor, Joe Koch, and Dale Dodrill). Ideally I would like to get them each in PSA 6, but if I need to I suppose I'll go higher. I also picked up a PSA Lattner, so I have a PSA 5 Johnny Lattner available in that card if anyone needs it. I also now have extras on quite a few 54's. I have the following short prints if anyone is interested: PSA 7 Eddie Price, PSA 8 Kenneth Farragut, PSA 7 Chester Hanulak, PSA 8 Thurman McGraw, PSA 8 Jim Neal, PSA 8 Bucko Kilroy, and PSA 8 Jerry Hilgenberg. I also have a PSA 7 Elroy Hirsch, PSA 7 Harry Jagade, PSA 8 Joe Arenas, PSA 7 Don Dohoney, PSA 8 Ernie Stautner, and a PSA 7 Arnold Galiffa. Drop me a line if you can use any of these. I'll trade for PSA 6's in the sets I am working on, or we can work a sale.
Well, it has been a while since anyone posted here. I sold a boatload of my cards late last year to pay some bills. I held onto a few and have been reworking some sets since then, but at a lower level. One set I am still working on is my 1954 Bowman set. I am down to the last card - Hugh Taylor. I am looking for a PSA 6 or better. I've actually gotten quite a few duplicates and I'm going to sell off some 7's and 8's in the near future. If anyone has that last card for me and wants to make a deal let me know. And have mercy on me if it comes up on ebay. I'm not looking to compete with the big boys, so I don't want to pay $100+ for it. I just want a lil' ole 6...
Gosh its been a REAL long time since I've checked in here. Any of the old time vintage football guys still on the boards? Havn't really followed the vintage football market since this past summer since I sold off some of my collection.....how is the market going? what's hot? whats not?
I'm still here. Been actually picking up some 51 Bowman card and upgrading a little on 55 Bowman. I haven't been actively looking at prices, but I haven't seen much hi grade football show up lately. I have noticed the auction houses have been offering some graded sets. I believe there was a 52 Large set broken up recently. Otherwise modern football has been very active this year. The Topps products had good value and with the emergence of Rc's such as RGIII, Luck, and Russell Wilson, thats were a lot of the football activity has been.
Hey Paul....hows it going? I'm doing great! Sold off about 11g of cards this past summer, banked it, refinanced my mortgage..which saves over $500 a month and am in the best financial shape of my life! I still have my 48 and 51 Bowman near sets, all of my 50 bowman stars and rookies and a bunch of other bowman...so I am not totally done! just trying to keep my sanity and not spend like I used to. My 12 year old son has been actively collecting, so I at least have hope to have someone to pass them on to if I dont sell them all.

Thanks for the update. So would you say the market for vintage is down or stagnant?
So would you say the market for vintage is down or stagnant?
Definitely not stagnant. It's just that many of my vintage sets are completed, so I'm just trying to fill the holes in my 51 and 55 sets. It seems though that instead of sets and higher quality material being sold on Ebay, it's being sold at the auction houses. I refuse to buy through the auction houses, so to me, my market is a bit limited.
Just sent the rest of my graded football cards to Probstein for consignment. This includes my 1954 near complete Bowman set (with lots of 8's). I can use the money to get off to a good start in my upcoming marriage (June 22nd woowooooo!!!!!). I actually think I might stay out of the registry for the future. I got so crazy about bidding for certain cards in certain grades. I recently bought some ungraded cards and I was just as happy with them. So, I will still buy PSA cards for my collection, but I think I am not going to worry about registering them. If I get a set that is 75% raw, and 25% graded that will be fine. Anyway, there will be a lot of nice PSA graded football cards from the 1950's coming up from Rick next week from my collection. Not a lot of super high graded stuff, but a lot of solid 6, 7, and 8's that would look good in collections (including a Unitas rookie, a Lenny Moore rookie, a couple of Blanda rookies, a couple of Atkins rookies, a McElhenny rookie, plus some Otto Grahams, Bobby Laynes, Chuck Bednariks, Lou Grozas, and lot of other HOFers). Hope these cards go to collectors that have the same passion for these early sets that I do.
Having sold my entire graded collection two years ago, it has been slow picking things back up. But, I am doing it. I recently finished a raw 1958 Topps set. I am about halfway through a raw 1954 Bowman set, and about 20% through a 1954 Bowman graded set (6 or better). I've been missing the 52's lately, so today I pulled the trigger on this one. Nothing special. Just a PSA 5, but the centering is nice and it will be a cheap start back into a set that I had a big chunk of at one time.

of course the large version of this card in an 8 would be more up your alley.
I think the sm overall has better centering than the lg. so a tad nicer eye apeal.
