Modern AGE toning??

RaufusRaufus Posts: 7,257 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have two 2011 W $50 AGE MS70 FS coins. I just looked at them for the first time in about two months. BOTH now have unattractive "toning" at 6 o'clock on the obverse.

On one of the coins there is a small blotch of "toning"/discoloration on the reverse at 9'o clock as well.

These have been stored in IS boxes in a climate controlled vault.

They've been slabbed for less than a year.

I took them out in preparation to sell one. Now that's clearly off until I can contact PCGS (closed today).

I know about the milk spot issues with silver, but gold toning in Moderns. Has anyone had this happen to them??

FWIW, my 2008 gold (in OGP) is untoned last time I checked the SDB (a month or so ago).

Yikes! I don't want to sell them toned.

Doesn't PCGS have some sort of review process for this?

Big $ coins. Really bummed out!!!!

Is the toning red in color?

sort of a reddish bronze color. I wish that I knew how to post pics here of I'd do so. Every time I've tried it's driven me nuts.

Here is a old thread about the "red plauge".

Thanks so much for the link!

The discoloration is not quite that red, but close. It sounds like this is the problem. Looks like spot review is the way to go. Unfortunately, best case leaves me with a large shipping charge and no coin to sell for weeks.

Thanks so much for the info!!!!

My experience (with many, many slabbed AGEs) is that some of them tone (sometimes turn a brass color) in PCGS and ICG holders but not in NGC holders. Best I can figure, the paper label is not sealed from the coin in the PCGS holder and is "gassing" the coin. I have seen this in numerous PCGS holders that contain AGEs. This seems to affect most of the coin and does not appear as spotting. Doesn't seem to affect other gold, just the 22K. This is why I replied in another thread that I prefer my gold in NGC holders.

I would not like it in little spots, but all the way around looks good to me

This likely won't affect you as you plan to sell the coins but I had a 08 w pr70 $50 Buffalo develop a bunch of red spots. PCGS fixed it after review and returned it as a pr70. Six months later I could see the spots starting to return so I sold it. I have a $10 pr70 buffalo currently at PCGS for spot review and a couple of the PCGS 99w $10 ms69 AGEs and one pr70 $5 buffalo that are toning evenly and attractively around the rims like the posted photo. So far none of my NGC modern gold coins have spotted or toned. When I was trying to buy a 06 revPr gold $50 I received and returned three spotted PCGS coins. Thea spot review door to door took about 5 weeks.

Not sure if anyone agrees with me but NGC modern gold seems stable and doesn't tone like the PCGS modern gold does......I have a friend with the 2008 buff set in both PCGS and NGC....the pcgs one turned

Thanks very much for the info folks! Off to spot review on Tues. Five weeks and likely $50 to ship.

I really wanted to sell before the 2011 W overtakes the 2008 W $10 AGE which I think is likely. The spots will likely kill this. Arrgh!

Pictures of the coin in question? Red spotting and toning are two different issues. I believe the red spotting to be caused by something in the coin and the toning to be a result of enviornment.

I've never been able to post pics on this forum without getting totally frusturated. I've tried PhotoBucket till I was blue in the face. Drives me nuts.

That said, the spots on the coin in question look like those in coinman's pics, though not as bad - yet. Major bummer.

Very nice. I assume that is in a PCGS holder? I graded a lot of 2006-W gold the first year that it came out and I still have a lot of $5 70s and 69s, some of which are toned very similar to the one you show here and some didn't tone at all. I've sold a few of the nicer toned ones on ebay (for a premium) and to forum members. Maybe I should list a few more. --Jerry
